Builds My Holley Sniper EFI kit install into my 1978 FJ40

I'm getting ready to install a 4 barrel Sniper on my '78 40 with a newer crate 350 motor. I've got the Sniper unit already purchased but need to finish getting all of the parts to complete the "kit". Plan right now is to run a Walbro 394 pump with the Napa metal pre and post fuel filters specified by Holley.

From the research I've done I'm under the impression I can just run new 3/8" EFI fuel line from the tank and I should have a factory port for the return line as well? And for anyone who's installed this unit on a 350 setup, did direct AN fittings into the Sniper unit work ok and how much fuel line did you end up needing? I've looked at running Gates Barricade hose unless the stuff from Earl's is superior and preferred.
There is a progressive linkage kit that is supposed to make the 4 bbl much more drivable. Something to consider

I've read that solid core spark plug wires don't work with the sniper EFI system. I think it's because they're too electrically noisy and interfere with the electronics. Can anyone confirm this? The manual just says to "keep sensor and crank signal (distributor) wiring away from high voltage or “noisy/dirty” components and wiring, especially secondary ignition wiring (plug wires)." It says nothing about solid core plug wires.
I'm assuming my $30 aftermarket plug wire set for the 2F are solid core. I'm considering this universal kit from MSD to go along with my holley sniper EFI.

UPDATE: (WARNING- LONG READ) today is June 1 2025. I will be posting the rest of this update shortly.

I have mentioned this in a few separate posts but after I finished the new room on my house I was going to start on my FJ40 and start to add all of the parts I have been collecting for the last 3+ years. It is an extensive list. Some of the involved parts I could not even lift. I had gotten most of the room nearly finished the week of Christmas 5 months ago, enough to put up the tree and keep warm at least.

Over the winter…the small finishing details beat me up. Window trim inside and out, paint, window shades, curtain rods, moving furniture, hanging pictures, patching holes and re-hanging pictures…my wife does this routinely. Anyone who has been thru a project of any kind knows how the little stuff is time consuming and at my age, exhausting. So now where does all of the energy come from to start ripping some major components apart then clean, rebuild and reinstall. 10 yrs ago I’d say “piece o’ cake”.

Doing this at this stage of the game becomes my greater nightmare. That 40 would be in the garage in parts and pieces scattered around for 6 months before it would ever run again. Over the last 50 years I have been elbow deep in my other land cruisers and while I would miss doing it now, there is a time-value here I cannot ignore. Should I give it up for a few weeks and enjoy the summer driving or take it apart and find greater changes for me by November? Life has its special surprises.

I’ve investigated several avenues and know I had found the best option. When @Chungas Revenge had the Mule 2.0 being rebuilt, I studied those posts and pictures really intensely. His comments and interactions with @Jdc1 were so successfull. I had zoomed in and stretched the pictures, asked a few questions and decided I need to step up my attack on my own 40. Given everything I’d mentioned above, the only real next step was to contact Jesse at Rubber City Land Cruisers and start a discussion. He reviewed my list…we agreed on a bunch of stuff and I packed all of my parts into the back and passengers seat of the 40…we set a time for the truck to arrive at Jesse’s shop. I’d found the best solution. The only greater option would be helping out in the shop as he puts out the brain power and horsepower.

THE LIST:
Front steering knuckle rebuild with bearings and seals
Disk brake FJ60 conversion
New master cylinder
Rear Brake Proportioning valve..( you guys inspired this addition)
Front and rear differentials with 3.70 gears
8 hole pinion flanges and pinion seals for fine spline shafts
Parking brake double output shaft seal from Valley Hybrids
Rear wheel bearings and seals
Rear Brake rebuild
Spring bushings
Spring shim casters
Sniper/Hyperspark fine tune
Needs a steering damper
Re-mount Saginaw power steering pump with Valley Hybrids bracket
New Motor mounts
Universal joints rear drive shaft
Tie Rod ends
Rear ambulance door window seals
Install new front windshield and install new window seal

Jesse @Jdc1 put me in the front row of his shop to sit and watch this transformation. The photos will speak for themselves… here is a small preview with more to come.

I have to send the pic of the clean windshield lol.

So, you see that…. @Jdc1 pays attention to the details… I’m happy to know there is a new windshield…he has to see it polished and clean…
I can’t wait to get this truck back…it’s gonna be great…

Stay tuned for the rest of these great pictures and the “small details”

@Jdc1 has been sending me photos during his late night sessions. This man loves Land Cruiser stuff. Jesse works til 11;00pm some nights and deals with many other daytime activities for family. Look at these…. Plain old greasy, dirty, sticky locking hubs… well, not any more.. they look new but he wants to touch up the black

Here is another update from @Jdc1 … “it’s freakin’ hot today here.” On the other hand progress has been very steady and moving right along. Naturally I am excited to enjoy the pictures but there ain’t nothin’ like getting in there yourself….so THIS is the meaning of vicarious? As you can see from the list, almost all of it is complete. Jesse bled the brakes and while not without a a mild issue, like the flare tool breaking, Jesse ran out and bought another one to not let anything slow him down

The City Racer master cylinder is installed, new brake lines and soft hoses all fit in nicely. Rear brakes are complete and final adjustments are next. Jesse made the new bracket for the Wilwood proportioning valve.

New Tie Rod Ends and 60 series taper adapters are all set but as usual, something always feels it does not want to cooperate
Bearing and races should make my 50 year old truck ride so differently. If Rubber City Land Cruisers can do something g for my 70+ year old joints, I’d be all set. The new differential gearing will make road travels nice…thanks for the idea @wngrog

A view of the wasted rear bushings
And the new differential mount

I know after a while they all look the same ….NO THEY DONT ! 🤣

Update: I’ve been communicating with @Jdc1 daily, some days until almost 11pm. He is a machine. Once he has a goal and visualizes it, he doesn’t stop until the target is reached. In addition, he has an active family life and I admire his dedication to both.

With that in mind, my FJ40 is nearly completed and could be on its way home shortly. I was looking at a few other things that should be looked at but Rubber City Land Cruisers does have other clients and they are lining up. It’s unfair to Jesse to occupy his time and shop and my list was a good one. I should be able to take over from here. Im sure I can tighten the license plate screws and cut-off the excess zip tie material. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I must have gotten very lazy by having a knowledgable talented guy dive inside my truck and make these changes. I have wanted to do these mods for the last few years. The truck and I will be better for it. While I probably should have been installing these parts as I had gotten them, I just got older and tired too quickly. My brain thinks it’s 35 but my body says otherwise. The moral of the story is….don't put off the things you want to do…tomorrow is not a guarantee.

This Land Cruiser is going to be a thrill to drive now…it could easily turn into a daily driver…sell that silly Silverado and really enjoy the ride

down to the small details

Fluids topped off and caster shims and front spring bushings should have this entire project almost wrapped up.
Alignment shop on Monday

What's going on with the ratchet straps? All 4 wheels up on a 4 post and wrapping the straps around the lift to align the springs and hangers? I'm really not fully utilizing the benefit of the lifts I have access to.
Probably not OSHA compliant but, I use the strap to hold the spring down and then use my bottle jack to walk the spring eye into position to slide the pin into place.

Did you intend to post this on your sniper build thread? Looking forward to the updates!
