Those jumper cables look undersized for their length. Hook the battery up to the normal cables, I'll bet it spins over way better.

This motor is ugly. I got a plan though. I got a Weiand intake for free and bought a sbc beginners kit.....lol.
We have a Speedway Motors in town now. So I was able to order a bunch of stuff to help this old small block . Pick up same day.
So, new to me intake, new carb, distributor, plug wires, starter, and ram horn style exhaust manifolds.

If you have never had an Edelbrock carburetor before, you’re probably going to like it. It’s a good choice for a SBC.

A lot of dual plane intakes have that divider in the plenum like yours. When I run a dual plane I like to have a thick base gasket that has an open center under the carb, so it evens out the air/fuel charge from side to side. There's a pulse effect in the intake and the gap evens out that pulse. At a minimum I'd use a thick open base gasket, but i prefer a 3/4 or 1" open center spacer. There was a recent Engine Masters episode on this subject with dyno results which confirmed this. They put O2 sensors in each individual exhaust port and found the open spacer evened out the air fuel mix to all cylinders and offered slightly more power. Without the spacer, the outer cylinders had a leaner mix. It's a cheap mod to consider.

Thanks for all the input. Yes, I have used Edelbrock carbs before and I am aware of the Engine Masters deal with the spacer on a dual plane manifold. I was into cars since high school. I had a 1978 Camaro with sbc that I turned into a Z28. I also had a 1969 Cutlass with a hopped up big block Oldsmobile. Fun stuff.
I finally removed the awful fender well headers. I gave up on trying to make it run for now. I plan to clean up the frame and reinstall the factory shock mounts. Then clean the motor. I also need to repair the bent motor mount.

Maybe consider going for a reduction starter on the SBC to drop some draw and get faster spinning. Since they are based off of the Nippondenso style starter it's a good homage to the Toyota it's in.
