My 1975 2F Holley Sniper Install…. (4 Viewers)

When I first installed the Sniper/HyperSpark I had difficulty getting IAC set correctly. After machining all the intact surfaces flat...including the phenolic spacer, it was much easier to tune. I suspect small intake leaks are the cause of some of these difficulties.

I agree that small leaks will wreak havoc while trying to set the system up. I believed this might be an issue but spraying and spraying all around and in and around the contact surfaces showed nothing. I won’t say with any certainty that this is leak free but I don’t find the resultant test results pointing towards it. I also did one mother of an install making sure I covered all bases and surfaces clean and sealed. I watched several videos as well as one of @wngrog pulling the throttle body off because of a suspected leak.😳 and even preemptively sealed all bolt holes and ports with rtv sealers including the spacer.

Anything’s possible though. So, never say never.

I viewed a bunch of fuel, AFR and timing maps today….this was very revealing. It revealed I know absolutely nothing about what they are telling me. Got a long long way to go.
Here are a few crappy photos of the laptop screen
Stay Tuned (no pun intended)

Here are my settings.
The IAC Ramp Start setting I think helped my cold starts the most. But, also needed my enrichment/afterstart enrichment higher with colder coolant temps.
The target idle speed curve works with the IAC ramp start setting too but I’m fuzzy on exactly how. I first left my target idle alone and adjusted iac ramp start to 400 (thinking it was rpm above target) and it would idle higher as it warmed up, all the way to 2000 rpm!

@Skreddy every thing that you mentioned last night makes a lot of sense. I need to see where the ‘learning’ settings are in my ECU. Coolant enrichment and after start enrichment, in my mind, is like my feathering the throttle on very cold starts but at least obligating the Sniper to do it for you until the coolant temps show it is warming up. Especially that you can return to more conventional fuel flows at operating temp.

I believe as I mentioned …if I can just accomplish this with the very cold start up…I would be pleased. Any other changes in improving efficiency will be the bonus. Got the motivation for sure. Need the brains for it next

Actually, this would be an update to “What Have You Done to Your Land Cruiser this Week”. I figured I should have tried to keep it under under some kind of build activity but…it’s all over the place.

I had this universal power windows install kit so since I wanted to stick those sound deadener mats in the doors and change the window regulators…i decided to toss it in. It’s easy to get it back to stock in a few minutes so if any ultra purist decided to buy this truck 25 years from now, it can be un-done. I’ll even pack the old door cranks inside the door cavity like a time capsule😉

Granted, it has taken me a long time to install this 3 hour project. It is absolutely not difficult but I am only spending a few minutes here and there putting it together. It is too freakin’ hot for me these days. Was 94* today and supposed to be 97* tomorrow and 92 Wednesday. Humidity HIGH.

I have posted a few pics from the last 2 weeks and here are some others as this project gets to 1/3 completion. Finish nails in the switch cover helped to align the marks for drilling into the door card

I am going to try to place the wiring tonight if the pole barn cools down a bit more. If not, it will have to wait til Thursday when it’s predicted to be 77*

I need to do this. My window cranks hit my roll cage. I have to crack the door to use them. Which brand kit did you go with?

I will take a photo of the box for you…. I have no clue who makes it 🤷🏼‍♂️

Made by Autoloc…got it from Man-A-Fre several years ago

the continuing saga of the power windows install. It has been too hot and too humid for me so nothing really got done. Today was 69* so I had a load of outdoor catch up and spent a few minutes working on the windows project. Both doors are done with mounting, and re-assembly. Lubed the regulators and finished the polyethylene barrier between the door card and the steel door. Only need to wire it up, hopefully tomorrow.

Was going to suggest a strip of sound deadener while you are in there you’ve beat me to it.

Since the sniper is long finished, I’ll just add some stuff here that is not Sniper related

Wrapping up the wiring for the power windows. I am very happy with the way it came out so this is only a test before setting it all in place permanently. It is faster up/down than the Suburban and the Silverado.

I am not affiliated in any way shape or form to the link or seller above, just in case you’re wondering

Surprised today on several fronts New
LONG READ:
You may have read I was not going to upgrade my suspension with the Terrain Tamer Spring and shocks despite the long list of other improvements. Like the rest of us, I have already over spent on my FJ40…so once again, the Backstory.

It has some very admirable changes to it and most of the guys who read the forum are probably well aware of that. After @Jdc1 had installed my other upgrades my 40 is just a real joy to drive. My pet peeve is the banging and bouncing on my own road and a few trails in the area where I live. While it’s fun going to the supermarket, I still find it a bit more for me on extended rides. Paved roads and interstate highways I can’t argue but…what fun is that. I do that every day

. Look at the speed limit and the speed of travel

The catch 22 is: do ANYTHING but something to the suspension so I can enjoy the other $$$ changes, or not drive it long because it’s a tough ride for me and those $$$ changes go to the next owner. I have not changed shocks or anything in the suspension so with what I have heard about the bad Dobinsons, that eliminates any movement in that direction. I bouncing around on 50 year old springs. The bushings when changed were like strips of electrical tape I do not want to take this truck into the $50k zone…but it’s reeling it in very quickly

Today my Terrain Tamer spring kit is here at my house. Picked it up at the truck terminal. The process took 4 minutes but the ride there was the usual nightmare. On the way back I get a text from Summit Racing…the seats I had ordered and we’re going to be shipped out in a month, were shipped today and will be here in 3 days.

It will be a process but, you can be assured I’ll get the progress reports posted as I get into it

So here we are day two after moving the 40 around to get the truck on the widest clearest spot in the shop. Got one of the old springs removed but had to stop and shower to bring my wife to a doctor visit.. We’re not usually on that side of NJ so we stopped at a few places for a few specialty items.
While it was late when we got back in, I was able to lubricate one set of bushings and set them into the spring eye…then open up the center pin and add my 4* steel caster shim and new pin to the assembly.

One discovery is that while I really don’t need cardboard under the truck any more, I have it. The weight of the spring with its protrusions kept getting dragged into the cardboard making it very hard to slide into position to align with the hangers. At this stage of life I have X energy duration. Just moving stuff uses up 35% of it so I don’t have the stamina to finish much.. so that is where I am. Plus getting up off the floor is comical with the knee replacement. Almost like a dying battery. You know you can only get so many cranks out of it before it needs a jump start. It is going smoothly in terms of getting it done, it’s only that it will take me close to the weekend to get completed.

You can see the rust and corrosion on the old spring. No wonder it is a rough bounce. There’s likely no slip between the leafs

Here is something I did learn today from Terrain Tamer: the military wrap end of the spring always goes to the fixed pin

Oh, the sandwich is Argula with prosciutto and balsamic glaze on a really great baguette

Well done , Al. That sandwhich looks spectacular, we have to drive pretty far for something like that around here.

Jesse, that was about 45 miles for us..but, WORTH IT! I’ve got another in the fridge for tomorrow: fried eggplant, roasted red peppers, mozzarella slices, arugula and tangerine balsamic glaze , again on a wide baguette ..soft but crispy crust.

Started to finish up the 1st corner of the install…got it done. I forgot to mention those Procar seats that I’d ordered form Summit Racing ,were supposed to ship in early October…. They came in 2 days ago…wow, that was great

When I was removing the first shock, the PO or someone used 3” cotter pins on the castle nuts…then to make it interesting they had bent the extra wire into a pretzel so removal was a 15 minute ordeal…anyone wanna learn a few new curse words?
