I've got no cat and a thrush welded turbo muffler and I really like how it sounds. Got a nice low growl to it and no real ricey-ness to speak of. At least from what I've taken it to. But I don't get up past 3K ever. Hardly even past 2500 really.

True, but remember we are talking about a 2F....not a race car.

doesn't matter. it is still just an air pump, and the better everything flows, the happier the pump is.

I run a magnaflow as well behind a warm 2FE. It's borderline abnoxious loud, but not ricer at all. It growls to 2500 and barks above that.

I also run a 2.5" exhaust from a warm 2FE, only I'm using a Flowmaster 40, plus cat. It sounds damn good, though louder than I wanted. I think it's louder inside the truck than outside. I wanted a Flowmaster 50, but the muffler shop said it wouldn't fit (FJ40). I think they were full of it.

CA emissions and a magnaflow behind my 3FE (when it ran) installed by PO. It's obnoxious, but it sounds like a truck and not a rice rocket. Its something I wanted to fix (I'm old, I like quiet) before taking her into the canyons and badlands in the SoCal desert.

if you want it super quite stick a stock type muffler on iit....if not pick something else.

Exactly, making the engine run more efficiently is a good thing. Toyota designed them in a certain way. That does not mean that there are not performance gains available that do not harm the longevity significantly.

A 2F is not a racecar motor, but it can still produce HP numbers above a stock GM V8 Tbi with some work.

Sound is so subjective. I run a 2.5" exhaust with a Magnaflow. I find it loud. To me, the quieter the better. My feeling is that the cruiser is gutless, and so why have any bark when you have no bite. Now, I'd probably feel different with a healthy V8.

I have MAF try-y headers and the full MAF exhaust system w/"test pipe", no cat. I like the sound. At idle it rumbles nicely. Winding out it sounds a lot like a hot rodded Corvair--not surprising since the muffler looks suspiciously like a Corvair turbo muffler. Much better throttle response and feels like some HP gains but not enough to justifiy buying the system just for that. I'm hoping it'll work well at altitude (I regularly go above 12K') and bump up the mpg some but I've not been there or done that yet. ;)

Couple of installation notes:
Go buy some 1/2" longer bolts for the collector, your life will be much easier.
Have a friend hold onto the tail pipe and wiggle it at your direction when you bolt that end together.

Just for current reference for anyone looking: I just installed a new OEM Cat-back exhaust on my FJ60. Muffler and pipe was about $290, Shipped from Beno at Nalley Stonecrest Toyota in Georgia. Thanks Beno!

Great fit, looks good, nice and quiet.

I'm using the walker exhaust and I bought it from Amazon. I have been real happy with the fit.

It is easiest to pull the part numbers from rockauto.

I had a shop put on a quality (not a cheap/promo type thing) 'turbo' muffler and it sounds good. Nice idle rumble, but nothing noticeable on the road. Just the way I like it. The cats do quiet things down and he ran 2.5" pipe from the cats back.
