How's the aroma of the second skin. I've seen this on a Trucks episode.

J

Smells kinda like latex paint when putting it down since it's water based. Once dry, I can put my nose on this stuff then take a big whiff and not smell anything.

Tomorrow comes the Cruiser Crap and then some carpet! First time Moonshine will have had carpet in her since she was last in Toyota Trails :grinpimp:

LOL me too it's been three years with bare floorboards and sor rubber mat the spectrum, insulation and marine carpet have made for a much cooler and quieter beast for sure. Johnnie u are going to love it.

It should quiet her down significantly. I'll try the second skin on my next project

You guys were 100% correct, but I ran into some problems along the way.

The second skin instructions are simply to remove all dirt and grease, then apply the spectrum product, no sanding necessary. I degreased as I showed you and then applied, but got some cracking in areas, but not all areas. After scraping off the loose spectrum, I sanded and wiped down again, then painted another three coats ( only on the bare areas ) and let dry, only to have the same damn areas crack again

Granted it has been pretty cold and humid, so maybe that has something to do with it. Maybe I didn't degrease properly. Maybe I didn't leave enough time between coats given the weather ( 2 hours drying time between coats ). I was sick of having my truck off the road considering how long it spent off the road just a couple of months ago, so I went to go put the Cruiser Crap on.

Unfortunately, the Cruiser Crap doesn't like to stick to the Spectrum, even with a stiff rolling. Like I said, it's fairly cold and humid, so that may have something to do with it, I don't know. I gave up.

I went to install the aftermarket carpet I got from CruiserYard and I was not impressed. In no part was this CruiserYard's fault. Jason @ Cruiser Yard was excellent to deal with. The problem is that this "carpet" is aftermarket and whoever put this stuff in the original cruiser cut corners in the fit under the dash, center console, rear heater and under the seats. Not a huge deal, but let's just say I won't be buying another aftermarket carpet for my truck, ever. I'm either sewing together something myself or buying a factory carpet. Somewhat frustrating, but with everything installed, the bad parts are mostly unnoticeable.

Rant over. Put the interior back together save the center console and took her for a spin. Holy cow, I was not expecting that the Spectrum would make such a difference! The truck is significantly quieter. You can have a conversation at decent volume while accelerating! This is going to make the drivability much better.

Long story short, I'm very impressed with the Spectrum liner. I'll be buying a couple more gallons to put more on the floor, then paint the doors and firewall later this summer when it's warmer. At that point, I'll also attempt to apply the Cruiser Crap to the Spectrum liner.

Man, you suck at this :D ! Haha! Seriously, looks like it will help a lot. You think all the adhesion issues are taken care of now? And what does a bucket full of that stuff cost?

It was mid 80's to low 90's when we applied it to the beast, I had one area maybe an inch where I had spilled some oil after the prep that did not take on the first coat but that was it. I think the temp and the rapid second coating, it does appear to be dry in just minutes, had more effect than any other factor. But it is sure great stuff. I bought 5 gallons and it was expensive but it seems to be worth the cost. :)

Even Johnny is going to get some more with all the trouble he had, it work as undercoat too! I use it as touch up on the undercoating when I get a bad scrape. See Ya!!

Hijack over: back to your wonderful absolutly wicked Diesel conversion keep it up.

Can this stuff be sprayed?

Thinking when I have my engine out I should coat the firewall, wheel wells with this stuff before putting on the reflective firewall insulation I have.

No, issues not taken care of. I stopped worrying about it and put her back together. I'll tackle it again in the summer.

5 gallon bucket is $288.

Thanks for the advice man. I'll re-prep everything and try to put the rest of the coating down in the summer.

Thanks Doc!

It can be sprayed on. Download the installation instructions from their website.

I was planning on doing the same thing. What firewall insulation did you get?

Sorry to here about the carpet frustration..

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHNNY!

Thanks J!! It was a hell of an awesome weekend :D

In other news, I turned in the max power screw by 1.5 turns over the weekend. HOLY CRAP is that an awesome setting. Running into an issue now where my boost is limited at ~12-14 PSI. I suspect that the wastegate is opening at that pressure, which therefore restricts max boost. I am going to take the wastegate off to adjust it as per Lonno's suggestions. I hope to get up to 30 PSI max.

Yeah, now we're talkin'! I bet you like getting on the freeway now.

In my truck while 10 psi starts feeling like something is happening, 15-20psi is when it really starts waking up. Of course it's a different turbo but I think your rig will feel like a rocket when you get north of 20psi. Right now I'm maxing at 23-24psi.

Oh yes sir :D Every aspect of driving this truck is better. Accelerating from a stop is easier and faster, the truck jumps when I goose the throttle and I still don't have much smoke while accelerating!!!

I'm glad to hear your experience with boost. I'm looking forward to getting this wastegate adjusted so I can get up to your boost levels :grinpimp:

Ok, so first fuel mileage report. This weekend my buddy Martin and I went camping, so we filled up ( two top off clicks ) and set out with the loaded truck. Got out there and was cruising at a comfortable 65ish. Saturday we turned up the max power screw by 1.5 turns and went on a couple of 1 mile test runs while tuning. Since turning up the fuel, I haven't been able to keep my foot out of the throttle. There is no longer such a thing as slowly accelerating :grinpimp: The way home was 70-75mph. Since then, I've driven to and from work for the past two days and all of that equated to 281.7 miles on the trip odometer.

During our highway driving this weekend, we measured how far off the speedo was with GPS and found that it's reading 15% fast. That calculates to 239.455 actual miles driven. I just fueled up and put in 12.058 gallons, at the same fuel station, same pump, with two top off clicks. That equates to.................. 19.85 MPG, which means a ~480mile range. Pretty good for a 26 year old truck :D

I've still got to adjust the wastegate so I'm making more boost and then I hope that I learn to drive gently again, at which point I may be able to get 23-24mpg. In any case, I'm very happy with ~20 mpg. :bounce:

That's awesome, but you won't go back to driving slow now. I know I didn't :)

X2! It's too fun to hear that turbo spooling.

~20mpg is excellent for a lifted brick on oversized tires that is not driven gently. I hate to imaging what my 2F would have been getting in my current configuration and driving style.

 I'm finding that out to be true. It's just too much fun passing other cars, I've never been able to do it before!

I was getting around 10, sometimes less depending. The diesel swap has literally doubled my mileage and range.

Right on Johnny. Can't wait for the diesel in Marley. Hopefully in the near future.

Yes sir, get on it!!

My buddy Chris and I have been talking about shifters a lot lately and it's one of the unfinished things on Moonshine. Right now I have an old hoodie plugging up the hole in my floor because I have no transfer case shifters.

JBCustomFab makes a sweet D300 kit but it puts the shifters right up next to the case, not up next to the tranny shifter like the stock 60 does. I want my D300 twin sticks to stick up through the stock hole, just like where we put the NV4500.

As a result, I think I'm going to have to fab up a pivot that bolts to the side of the transmission, then have some linkage go back to the shifters. Has anyone done this with a NV4500 / D300 combo before? I searched around but couldn't find anything like it for this transmission.

Conceptually it's the same as setting up shifters for an automatic, like many others have had, just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy.

The side of the transmission I have to work with:

You think about running cable shifters for the case?

Hey Johnny, look at a place called Northwest Fab. I bought some reverse cable shifters and with that you can put the shifters anywhere you want. The cables are about 4 feet long.
