That would not be my choice. Simply routing the exhaust all the way out the end will also help shift that noise to the rear which you have planned anyways. Add a straight through muffler and I think you'd be golden. The rest of the noise, at least the dominant noise for me, is engine and that's where the sound deadening helps out. At highway speeds it a mixture of tire, wind and engine noise. The engine noise does not drown out the others, in fact wind noise is a pretty big one.

At this point I can just barely hear wind noise, over the exhaust, so it sounds like what you've got is where I need to go. Which muffler would you recommend, an Aeroturbine?

Tires look great, I am thinking of getting a set of humvee tires myself for road driving and keeping the creepy crawlers for terrain that warrants biased tires. Where did you find the wheels to fit the Toyota pattern?

At this point I don't have any specific brand recommendations, just not to go with what I have since I think there is more improvement in sound reduction of the exhaust to be had from my setup that won't hurt performance. A straight-through design is what I'll be hunting for once I ever get to the other turbo install and I would expect that to be louder than a chambered design but since I've experimented with a straight pipe any muffling will make the exhaust quieter. The other side of that is that any muffling can also add restriction and I liked the performance response I got from a straight-pipe design, the exhaust was just a little too raspy for my tastes so I cut that baffle in half to experiment. The sound improved, is louder at the tail pip than a full baffle (but not as loud as a straight pipe) and I still don't get droning in the cab. Overall I'd like to reduce the noise out the tailpipe and keep as much performance as possible. I do like some attitude from my exhaust.

Seeing your low egts makes me think of adding more fueling and restricting the exhaust will raise your egts and limit your potential to add more fuel. These are my opinions of course and you don't have to follow them, just giving you more information to help you make a better decision for your set up. Ultimately it is you driving your rig and you may decide stricter muffling is better for you. I'm interested to see your results on whatever you choose.

Effing sweet man, I'll order mine from there. Thanks!

Thank you sir! Wheels came with the tires, but 16.5" diameter wheels with the Toyota 6x5.5 pattern can be ordered from Summit or other places.

Thanks for your input Mike! You've convinced me that I should go with a straight-through muffer at least to start. I can always add a resonator in the tailpipe if I think it's necessary.

Got the boost and speedo gauges hooked up. Boost was easy as there is a 1/8" NPT fitting in the head, so a quick trip to Lowes gave me the coupler needed.

After grinding the stock speedo cable square to fit in the Dana 300 speedo drive, I simply threaded the factory speedo cable onto the Dana 300 speedo drive unit. Here's proof that it works!

A quick drive reveals that the speedo reads about 10mph fast when compared to GPS rated speed. Good thing about the Dana 300 is that there is an enormous amount of aftermarket support, so it will be easy for me to get another tooth count to correct the speedo.

WELL..... WE'RE WAITING!!!

HA! great job as usual Johnny

Sweet, glad you have it back on the road. I tend to agree with your thinking that a straight pipe will be sufficent. Way to go awesome. :):bounce:

Yes, after seeing your acceleration video you are obligated to turn up that pump.

On your throttle blips there is not even a hazing, EGTs are really low, and I honestly would have liked to see the turbo more responsive on boost making but maybe you weren't really pushing on it. Really I'm jumping ahead and the best thing that you are already doing is just driving it to get to know the drivetrain-get your baseline. Pulling the exhaust out to the back and adding some muffling will help remove the sharpness in the exhaust note. Nice job so far and from what I can see you have room available in your set up for performance growth when you're ready which is a great place to be.

^^^^^2 .. you gotta put some fuel on that engine ...

Johnny,
Watched the videos. Nice! It's fun to drive isn't it? Hard to believe you're getting all that from a four-banger. What is you boost guage reading at 15-1700 RPMs? I'm getting almost no boost tooling around. And my top boost reads 15. I suspect that I have to go through the whole intercooler system and make sure every fitting is tight and every gasket is doing it's job. Then again, your video shows about the same thing I'm getting.

looking good I bet your neighbors love you.

Thanks Doc! Am I gonna see you out at some events this year?

SWEEEEET Johnny. Man that monster sounds and is running great.

Thank you sir! I'm very happy with how it came out :D

I have the same thoughts. Boost response is pretty sluggish with a current max of only ~12 psi, but we're at the stock fuel settings. Throttle response is good but above 1/2" pedal travel it doesn't feel like the IP is adding any more fuel. I suspect I'm hitting the max fuel limit pretty quickly. Turning up the fuel is going to seriously wake this thing up, but that's not gonna happen for at least a little while.

Thanks for your advice throughout this process Mike! As soon as I can get a good mileage estimate, get the exhaust routed and get some sound deadening put down inside I'll start cranking up the fuel. I'll make sure to take videos along the way :grinpimp:

Yeah lots of room to grow in fuel and boost there.

Don't worry guys, I will turn it up. Lots of room for power addition is what I wanted and is one of the beautiful features of this motor :grinpimp:

It is fun to drive! I'm seeing the same thing as you, almost no boost cruising around. At 15-1700rpm with the throttle wide open at full load, I'm seeing ~8psi. Have you turned up your pump at all?

I have verified that my 4 clamps are tight, but they're not t-bar clamps, just cheap little worm gear clamps. Think that might be part of the problem?

looking good I bet your neighbors love you.

They certainly don't hate me! I've fixed my neighbor's cars a couple of times and one guy even consults me for woodworking projects, lol.

Also, took this picture at work the other day. Feels good to get the very front spot at work :grinpimp:

GSMTR fer sure have already got the week off, a spot in the Upstate Cabin and rarin to go, all the other events are if no work interfears. But yes I hope so I sooooo want to check out the mods you have done. I should have the windows from Kevin in by then too. Marshall is putting them in for me as I am never home anymore. Any way hope to see you at GSMTR for sure if not before.:)

I'm not gonna be able to make GSMTR. That's too soon. My goal is to have Moonshine trail ready for July. We shall see! :steer:

In other news, I ordered up two gallons of Second Skin Audio's Spectrum sound deadener / heat reducing coating, 50 sq/ft of Cruiser Crap and another factory carpet. I also picked up a 70 series flowmaster and a 5" chrome exhaust tip for free today, so that's the muffler I'm gonna run!

Exhaust parts:

Also pounded out some more of the factory insulation crap so that the Spectrum would adhere better:

Love the t/t Supra!

How tough is getting the deadening off? Been wanting to do it, but looked like such a pain even with dry ice?
