Sorry, forgot about the air filter question.. There were a few things.. I didn't like the fact that I had to oil the filter.. I didn't like that the filter was exposed and could get water in it.. And finally, the intake temps were higher than I like.. They are lower now...

Have you got any before & after temps you could share (under similar conditions)?

I used an oil-less model cone. And I put a pre-filter sock to catch the big chunks.

I do notice the high intake temps though.

Did you get any intake noise reduction from the switch?

I didn't document the temps before to much.. but I would say 10-15 degrees lower in stop and go traffic.. 20 at highways speeds.

Update – 06/30/15

More progress on the rear storage drawers. I wanted to but some carpet or something on top of the box to keep down the noise and to prevent things from sliding around, but really wanted something I could spray off if it got dirty. I decided to use this Utility Mat from Lowes.

Worked great.. I hope it holds up as well as it looks

Next project was to integrate a Power inverter into the storage system. I didn’t need anything to large so I went with a 1500W/3000W unit. This unit can power my circular and jig saws, soldering iron, drop light, margarita maker, etc… I am pleased with how it turned out..

Rocker Switches for the compressor and the rear locker. I also went ahead and cut the front locker spot as well.. I hope to get it done in the next few months. The tuffy console doesn’t look as scratched in person as it does in the pictures.. But when I tear everything down this winter, I will have it powder coated.

I think that brings me up-to-date.. Ordered a small under the seat powered 8” subwoofer and a 4 channel amp for the stereo system. I have AC, but really enjoy driving with the windows down, problem is I cannot hear the radio as loud as I would like when I am driving down the interstate at 80mph.. Hopefully those new items will help..
Happy 4th of July to everyone… and be safe!

Great thread, great build, outstanding skills and craftsmanship .....and willing to share his knowledge in the forum...you're a great dude!!!

I'm gathering components for a similar engine swap into a FJ60, this thread will be used as reference. thanks.

Couple questions:
a) cooling system...I see you ran your LC for some time with the stock radiator, then replaced with an Aluminum 3 rows because of leaks. Do you consider the OEM radiator capable to deal with the LS engine heat dissipation requirements for offroad use??.

b) Have you ever used a belt driven fan in a LS swap??...if yes, how do they perform vs e-fans like the ones you installed?

d) what is the dimension (space) between your engine & radiator??....I'm planning on running a LS from a 2500 truck -stock belt driven fan engine- but would like to find out if I may face any space constraint issues.

e) I see you're running blockhuggers....do you think stock truck manifolds would fit in this application? would they clear the AA engine mounts??.....what about corvete style manifolds?.....
f) what other engine mounts have you seen for these LS into FJ60 swaps?? your welds are good but the frame horns seems too long (AA design).
f) would you please provide pictures of the oil pan above the front axle??? would like to know how much is the dimension from oil pan to axle.

thanks in advance

Pedro

Pedro.. Thanks for the complements..

a) I believe the stock radiator cooled just fine. I never had a problem with it over heating. The aluminum may cool just a little better.

b) I have seen belt driven LS swaps.. I see know reason why it would not work. Biggest issue in my mind is the shroud, need to built a custom one. The e-fans may get a little better mileage than belt driven.. I have used e-fans on both LS builds I have done.. no problems.. yet.

c) Opps... no C...

d) 8.25" from the front of the water pump to the radiator.

e) Stock truck manifolds will not work. I even attempted to use trailblazer manifolds with no luck. I have heard of others using corvette style manifolds with success.. I would have attempted to use corvette style had I had them. With that said.. almost 30000 miles with the AA headers with no problems.

f1) I have seen several builds with custom designed motor mounts. I have not had any problems with the AA mounts (30,000 miles).. so not sure it is worth the extra effort. I have heard of others having problems with the AA, so maybe I am just lucky, or maybe the failures happen after I have driven more miles. The frame horns seem to be about the right length, I had the cut the drivers side down a little due to the motor offset to that side.

f2) sorry no picture... But I have ~ 4" of room between the oil pan and the pumpkin of the axle. I will try to take some pictures in the future. I am using a truck pan, but I have a 2.5" lift and extended shackles. It is 3.25" between the axle and the bump stops on the frame.

Good luck with your build.

Hi Mark,
take a look at the exhaust manifolds I'm planning to use...I had them available since last year -CL find, out of a Camaro, F-body exhaust manifolds, the corvette ones drops lower as far as I know.

P1060054.JPG

Do you think it will clear the AA mounts??.....
Being mounts lower cost than exhaust manifolds maybe I should look for alternatives..something like Ruffstuff or the Rock Tactics LS mounts...both can"offset" the actual mounting point forward...

Time for an update… It has been a few months, I am still driving the FJ62 every day. It is my daily driver. I have put ~31000 miles in the L33 since I installed last year. I got it running on July 31st of last year and so far I haven’t had any issues.. Knocking on wood here..
Last update I installed a ARB locker in the rear, since then I have..

Built some tool holder devices to keep my tools organized and easy to find. It also helps with identify when a tool is missing.. I think I have about $10 invested in these..

I have used the tools a lot more than I thought I would. I try to use them even when I am in the shop just to make sure I am not missing anything I might need on the road.

Next up is the horns… My wife always laughs at me when I would get on the horn to alert the jackass next to me that he is drifting in my lane because he is preoccupied with his/her damn phone.. The little bit of noise it makes is so high pitched, I doubt anybody could hear it a highway speeds. I decided to do something about it. I looked on line at aftermarket horns, but after thinking about it I decided to go with horns from the local pull-apart. I selected a nice set of mid 80 Cadillac horns 3 dollars for both.. They have been very effective in getting the cell phone jackasses attention.

Last but not least.. I finally connected the HNL transfer case selector. I had o built a bracket to mount the shifter to. The one that comes with the advanced adapter kit must be designed for the FJ60 and not the FJ62. I used a piece of 3/16” plate and the mount from the adapter kit.

My plan was to tear the FJ62 down this winter and do a ground up redo… sand blasting, powder costing, repair and replace dents and rust and then paint the vehicle. That may be delayed a little bit… I went looking for a FJ80 to drive while I have the FJ62 tore down, and I found this..
Mark's LX450 build

So I need to get the LX450 running before the tear down can start.

Wish me luck

Awesome!

What's up with the relay? Why is that necessary?

Thanks.. a couple of reasons for the relay.. The new horns pull more current than the old horns did, and the wiring for the horns is not large enough.. also, the Toyota horns are triggered with a ground and the Cadillac horns are positive triggered.

Bear with me, I'm still coming up to speed with the differences between ground-switched and positive-switched.

Based on what you pictured above, the relay yellow wire goes to each of the Cadillac horns. Blue and white are bridged to a ring terminal, which is then connected to the battery. Does the relay black wire then connect to the stock horn connector? If so, which pin?

Don't get me to lying about wire color or connector pins.. What you stated sounds right.. below is how you would do it using the blade numbers on the bottom of the relay..

pin/blade
30 12V to battery this should be fused.. 30 amp should work
86 12V to battery you could tie this into 30 before the fuse
85 To the horn button.. this wire will go to ground when the horn button is depressed.
87 12v out to horns
87a not used....

hope this helps

Mark, great work! Sorry for coming a few months late to the party. Lots of inspiration and instruction in here as my brother and I start my build. Thanks for all of your posts and for sharing your knowledge!

Thank you... I need to finish the FJ62.. I got a little distracted with life, work, and the Lexus build Mark's LX450 build. I hope to start back on the 62 this summer. Full tear down, and ground up on the frame and body. Once again thanks.

Mark, Do you do lots of cocaine? I don't know where you get all the energy to power through your projects. I was wondering what happened to this build, and then I found out about the lexus. That thread entertained me all morning.

Thanks for documenting your work, highly entertaining and informative.
Keep it up

LOL.. no Cocaine.. just lots of planning and hard work.. The plan was to get all of the safety/mechanical items completed on the LC, and then drive the crap out of it before I started on the cosmetics (rust, body, and paint). That is what I have done.. 20 months of driving and enjoying. Over 35,000 miles since the end of July, 2014. I still have a few more things I want to get done on the Lexus, but hopefully I can get back to the LC this summer sometime.

Thanks
Mark
