Haffi,

Great progress on the snorkel.. I like the bike rack too. The square red lights on your tail gate....are they factory or did you add them??

Thanks
Stu

factory for some overseas cruisers

Thanks Al,

I like the look of them

not to harsh your mellow but i notice you have mounted this to the fender as well as the roof. do you forsee any problems with twisting when offroad? seems something might give and i'm thinking it's the roof mount.

These are for sure factory, they are rear fog lights.

Good question, i haven´t thought about that. Do you really think that the body sways that much?

The snorkel itself sways a little, but if this seems to become a problem it could be solved by drilling bigger holes and adding a rubber plugs to the holes on the snorkles upper mounts.

There really shouldn't be any noticeable deflection between the roof and the front fender. A unit body Jeep would probably be a different story.

i should think if the body has flexed enough to cause problems with cracking a fibreglass snorkel, you'll have bigger worries on your mind than a few broken snorkel mounts.

Time for another update.

Last night I glassed the two halves together again.

Here is a shot of the air intake. I´m going to cover the opening with a metal net of some kind. I haven´t looked for the right net just yet. I still have some sanding and finishing to to on this pic.

Tonight I started sanding and filling.
This pic is after sanding the fiberglass with a handheld belt sander with 120 grid sandpaper.

Then I applied some body filler and sanded it down.

Right now another layer of body filler is drying and waiting to be sanded down tomorrow.

Looking good, I like it very much. Keep the pics coming, Haffi!

Thanks, I will ;)

Spent a few hours in the shop today sanding and filling. I hope it will be ready for paint sometimes tomorrow. I really hope I can spill some paint over it and let it dry the other night. Right now it is covered in a thick layer of spray on filler to fill up all the small pinholes.

I have done some work on the intake. I did open it a bit more, added some filler and sanded. It is becoming the way I want it.

I really hope to post pics of it painted tomorrow ;) and then installed on Monday.

Looks awesome :)

What's gunna keep water from getting into the intake though

Like rain water or kids pouring soda

Nothing, but since water is heavier than air, it should flow down the bottom of the tube and end in the bottom of the compartment on the fender, from there it flows down the 12 mm tube and out of the snorkel.

My plan is to add a bottle or some container inside the fender, below the snorkel to collect water. Then I have a valve to let it out. On a normal day and when driving in the city this valve can even be open letting all the water out instantly.

Don´t you think this is going to work?

Before I glassed the two halves together I sprayed some water on it with a garden hose, all the water went that way before filling up to the intake holes level.

What happens to the water in the bottle when the temps go below freezing though :hhmm:

Why do you think there will be so much water in there?

I have a uncle that made his own snorkel, he has a valve to release water from it. When he opens it every few months he gets a tablespoon or two of water from it. He as a front facing opening.

You probably won't see any water under normal conditions, but whenever I see a new design, I always think of the worst case scenario in where it might fail :hhmm:

This goes for any Land Cruiser mod since it's the vehicle of choice for the worst driving conditions :o

Torrential rainstorms, blizzards, ice storms, muddy water or just kids playing with a garden hose

Most factory snorkels usually have a secondary cavity or separator for water run out before going down the main tube that leads to the filter

The same goes for factory ram air setups on performance cars :)

You don't want to know how many hydro locked cars I've had to tow due to faulty aftermarket ram air systems that sucked up water from a flood or hard rain :bang:

Thanks for your comments, I can see your point.

Do you have any suggestions how I can improve the snorkel?

Do you thing that a down facing hole at the top, before the tube takes the turn down would help? I could also build a small wall inside it right after the hole to stop water from flowing and direct it down the hole and out. I hope you understand what I´m thinking ;)
