Hey all, relatively new to the 80's series platform, but I've always been a fan and wanted one for years. Then I made a terrible mistake, I started researching builds and which way I wanted to take my LX450. Then I really made a mistake and started reading through @jomelo and @SNLC 's builds threads. So shout to you guys for inspiring this 1HD-FTE dream, and financial nightmare.

So I bought the LX450 about a year ago now, had 150k on the odometer, and I've added about 10k in that time. it's my DD so it'll continue to go up. It's been re-sprayed, and I've fixed a lot of the little quirks that come with these, at the age they are now. heater hoses, small interior items, coolant flush, etc. Then she started spewing coolant out the side of the block at cylinder #6. I was a little thrown off, but who knows if the ODO is correct, or how many times it's been overheated in it's life. it came with next to no maintenance history so I knew it was a gamble. I still drive it, it runs fine, no signs of coolant mixing with oil. I just make sure she's always topped up on coolant.

I was at a crossroads, do I tear into the 1FZ-FE, make sure the block is fine, get a new head and throw a turbo kit on it? It's sensible I can get most of the parts here, there are some great shops around if I need someone to do it, @Cruisers and Co is local and was a huge help. I stopped by a few times and talked Johnathon to death about which route to go. 1FZ-FE wit a Turbo kit, or 1HDFT/FTE.

I decided to go down the painful route... with the highest gamble. a few weeks ago I bought a 1998 HDJ100 through Japan Car Direct. Mike was my auction agent, and he was great to work with. I'd pick out an HDJ100, he'd go over the auction sheets, and give me his thoughts, we did this for a about a month before we finally landed on one, I thought I could get it for a decent price. The stars aligned and my bid won it. The ship date is the first, should hopefully be here by the end of May.

Here's the LX450, on Charlie Brown Christmas tree duty

Here's the HDJ100, coming from crusty rusty Hokkaido.

I'm looking forward to get started tearing out the 1FZ-FE when the HDJ100 gets here, and see if I can't do this swap for a sensible amount of $$$. I'll update when I get her home.

This should be a good one, I am in for the ride.

You will enjoy the 1HDFTE.

Are you planning to convert to 5-speed manual or stick with the 4-speed auto?
Hey @lelandEOD, In the beginning I was thinking about sourcing a HDJ100 from south/central America or Western Europe, France/Spain area for a complete manual truck, but those would be LHD, more expensive, and often seemed absolutely flogged condition wise, also in my opinion the import process seemed way less streamlined when compared to JDM importers/auctioneers.

Finding a manual HDJ100 was nearly impossible from Japan also. Out of all the auctions I watched roll across probably 100-150 HDJ100's I only saw 1 manual and it was ROUGH. So for simplicity sake (Maybe) I opted to just keep the 4 speed for now, and if I really want a 5-speed, I'll start piecing it together slowly.

I've re-read your conversion write up about 2-3 times now, so hopefully that'll help as well since I'm keeping the auto.

Well, she should be loaded on the boat today or tomorrow I believe. Luckily as long as she hits the united states before may 27th, ill just have to pay the normal 2.75% duty fee, and not the increased 10% from tarriffs. Once she makes landfall, I'll get all the costs together incase anyone else curious about the costs around importing a cruiser.

Tossed on the 35x11.5x17 Falken Wildpeak AT/4's I've had sitting around for nearly a year. So glad I replaced the Linglong MT's I had that were probably 15 years old. Going camping this weekend in her, might be the last camping trip before I start digging into the 1HD-FTE.

Speaking of the HDJ100. It landed in the port and was offloaded on the 21'st. @Riverrunner is trying his best to get a driver who can pick up on the specific pick up dates at the port. Which is proving to be a pain in the ass. Terminal is only open M,T,TH,F. Memorial day isn't helping either. Oh well. I'm thinking of offloading the Stock Land Cruiser wheels + 1 LX450 wheel. If anyone is in the Denver area and is interested let me know.

I replaced the outer door seals and that may have helped with the wind noise, but I also ordered the window surround film/seal. so hopefully that will quiet down the cab. the A/T's are also much more quiet on the road.

I do think I'm going to tear down the HDJ100 first instead of just trying to hot swap the 1HD-FTE into her. without seeing the 1HD-FTE yet, I'm sure it'll need to be at the minimum re-sealed + a new timing kit installed. My wife and I were joking around about watch us do all this and still have to order a longblock FTE..... hopefully not. We'll see though.

That's all for now! I'll post again when I get the HDJ100 in the driveway.

I went through this rabit hole just recently.

The 100 engine needs a few parts to work with your solid axle 80.

Youll need the oil pan/pickup tube and accessory drive of a 1HZ/1HD/1HDFT or even an FTE off an application with solid axle.

The FTE came with a different elbow for cooling return on the engine side. You’ll need one of a 1HDFT if you can find it. That coolant elbow has provisions for a turbo connection. On the 100 it’s long and won’t work with your factory radiator if you want the hoses and everything oem.

I just started mine after a few months of chasing engine accessory parts. No test drive yet but the engine sounds real good. I can’t wait to drive it

Let me know if you have any questions
