Today escalated quickly,

I was just going to pull the shifter console but said screw it. I've had some killamat laying around forever so im going to put that down sometime.

If anyone has a good strategy for removing the left over padding that tears from the carpet let me know!

Another question, anyone actually put in a regular speaker in here and it sound decent?

1000006499.jpg

This is just straight up cool

All for now, putting the cherry picker together Friday, will try and pull the 1fz this weekend.

Hey Jorgito, I read your conversion thread a while back, and will re-read it again! When you say re-use the right hand side engine mount are you referring to re-using the fte mount or the 1fz mount?

As for accessories (aircon, etc) I have everything from my 1fz and the 1hd-fte still so that shouldn't be a problem.

I'll probably bend my own fuel lines, and use the stock ones as a reference.

Wiring is going to be the challenging part for me. This is my first ever engine swap, and ive never been strong at wiring, so it'll be a learning curve. My goal is to have it in and able to start/run by the end of summer.

Also! I fully intend to keep this as simple and cost efficient as possible, I do plan on a few performance upgrades at some point, but not during the swap itself. Id like to have 275whp or so when its "finished"

Thanks for all the info! This is great for me, and others who are looking at the swap. I think you'll start to see more and more of these in the states now that we can import HDJ100's

You won’t get 275whp without upgrades. Stock an FTE is a bit lack luster, best you could expect stock is 120rwhp. That’s at sea level in perfect running condition without a bunch of soot clogging it up. My new 1FZFE produces 115hp being full time 4wd and fairly stock.

275hp if fully doable though, that’s probably around 450ftlbs. Diesel power is about the torque. Better plan on ARPs as well.

Cheers

Oh yeah! I've seen some crazy numbers by FTE's im just looking for enough power when I put my foot down, i feel like im actually accelerating, even at 5-7000 feet.

You should re-user the engine mount from the 1hd-fte . Regarding the wiring, me as others have used the looms from Australia.

@Mag71k5 It seems you and @lelandEOD have inspired / re-ignited the fire in me to make questionable decisions and do this swap. I have found a 1HD-FTE / A750F combo and will be picking it up in the next week or so schedule permitting. We may be able to share some ideas we're both charging through a similar swap.

Will do you be doing an EGR delete on the FTE?

Awesome! Im always glad to drag someone else down with me when I make poor financial decisions. Lmfao.

Yes ill be cleaning up the Intake manifold, and deleting both the EGR, and the intake grid heater.. im sure mine is full of nasty soot with 330k's on it.

Hopefully emissions doesnt notice when i eventually try and register it here in Colorado, if it does ill either use my parents address and register it in Georgia, or go with the Montana plates/LLC route.

Today's sidequest, some of the early Japan spec HDJ100's came with a over speed alarm, and reverse alarm. That speaker is built into the cluster circuit board. Not anymore though.

I've been driving the HDJ as a daily, so its been annoying as hell having to hear a chime go off anytime you go over 62mph.

When i get back from lunch im starting in the cherry picker. Its an amazon, chinesium special. Hopefully I don't die using it twice.

I thought one of the fte mounts had to be changed when going from a 1fz to 1hd-fte
This is correct. You will need to swap the right side cast-iron engine mount pedestal to a HDJ80 pedestal in order to line up with the existing frame mounts. The 100 series frame is wider hence the cast-iron pedestal is also too wide.

Thank you! This is what I bought.

Stopping here tonight, have a few more connectors to unhook on top of the trans, and maybe pull the transfercase shifter.

I also ordered the FT airbox lid, and I have a lead on an ft oil pan and pick up as well.

Ive been debating if I just want to say screw it and contact mick, the guy who builds fte harnesses or not, we'll see..

Tonight's work,

1000006561.jpg

Pulled CD player assembly, speaker assembly and transfer case shifter
1000006558.jpg

Measured the speaker for the center console.
1000006563.jpg

Ordered this pair, we'll make one fit, ill just wire the speakers into the fronts. If it sounds like s*** ill just disconnect it.

We're at the last three steps. Fingers crossed the 1fz is on a pallet tomorrow.

And the state of things, pulled it all together, once i actually had it ready to pull, if only took about 30mins or so, got hung up on the exhaust for a sec, had to take pry bar to it so it would let go, then it got hung from the transfer case at the front core support, took the air out of the tires, and i was able to lift up on the transfer case and push while she pulled the cherry picker. She's out.

Now for the slow part of the build, im going to clean up the engine bay, and the interior, i sent mick fte a message on FB regarding a harness, so we'll see.

Is there anything specific youd replace while you have the room? Let me know.

My wife was a huge help

Also, I'd like to say, if anyone wants to do this, but feels like you may be over your head, just do it. Buy the FSM, get a few hand tools. I have nothing special in the tool, department. Just the basics, and was able to make this happen.

This is also the first time I've ever pulled any engine, plenty of youtube how-to's as well.

Well now we wait for the FT/FTE parts to come in, and possibly a harness.

Awesome work, looks like you’re cruising along. I’ve seen multiple recommendations for someone known as thraslux on the FB swap page for harnesses. Is this the same person as mick?

Also, I did a brief search on partsouq and it wasn’t looking like they had HDJ80 oil pans in stock. Where would you recommend sourcing one?

You’re getting me very exited to do this same procedure, can’t wait to see your results!

So I've heard mix reviews about thraslux, Mick Fte is different guy, he stated in a post on FB he's done LHD's and has a jig for the harnesses specifically for them. The hard part is going to be dealing with the immobilizer that HDJ100 ecu's have. Im waiting for his reply so we'll see. I might have to ship my ECU or just buy a spare he has if that's possible.

For the oil pan and pickup, Ive got a lead on a part out. Hopefully that works out or I'll be using ebay and paying a TON for shipping from AUS.

Also! Get yours started! Start a thread when you do!
