If you converted your license plate lights to LED, but they don't seem very bright or cut out, then you need to fix the ground problem discussed in this old thread:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/185982-78-fj40-license-plate-lamp-question.html

There's actually a flaw with the design. The license plate lights are fed only a power line (except for the last few model years where they added a ground wire). Ground is through the bracket to the door, then from the door to the car body. The contact between the door and the body can be very loose, thus the ground connection is either weak or intermittent.

The solution is simple: Add a wire from any bolt on the door (e.g. door latch) to either a bolt on the tub, or to the unused ground wire in the harness.

With a solid ground, your license plate light will stay bright.

spreadsheet for this

This is for a 79 but it's a good starting point

The first number is the original bulb numer which should match up to most incandesant bulb charts. The other info is the part # from LED Lights, Bulbs & Accessories - SUPER BRIGHT LEDS that I used as a replacement.

Boy, it sure would be cool if someone did a spreadsheet for this like the nut and bolt spreadsheet!

Go for it, then update it every three months when there are new and better LED bulbs available and the old ones are no longer available.

The information you quoted is 6 years old and obsolete. There is updated information later in the thread.

Well, I meant an up to date spreadsheet of course. No reason to get your panties in a wad. Geeze......

How about just a stock light bulb spreadsheet we can cross reference from? 'Scuse me if it already exists...

I haven't seen one. It would be useful for sure, as it does change across model years. Go for it!

EDIT: Unless you have one of each year FJ40, it will probably require some group effort to collect the data...

If someone will post up a new updated list I'll update my original post. As well Yooper I'll put any links in there. Google docs would be a god idea. Could Also do a wiki mud .

OK I'll give my effort into this. I'll see what I can come up with and have on it Google docs. Am I reading this correctly that yooper has the latest and greatest list?

I would have done it if I could've copy/pasted. Yooper's excellent info is spread over several posts on page two of the thread.

First off thanks for putting this thread together, based on these instruction, I have upgraded all of my interior lighting and it is great.

I did not have a dome light however and I did not think the OEM would meet my needs, so I bought some small but very bright LED panels from Amazon, they are 1.5 X 2.0 inches and have 48 LED’s on each for only $9.27 each.

Then I made a sheet metal clamp with two flat surfaces and strapped to my center roll bar. With one LED panel tilted forward and one aft. Then I cut windows in the roll bar pad, so only the panels are exposed ( no head knocking here).

Mounted a toggle at the door pillar and voila!

They are bright beyond belief. You can read a newspaper anywhere in the front or rear, and no bad glare since they are so high up in the cab.

Can you post up a pic or two of the lights mounted?

Here you go.

It is centered on the top roll bar ( I only shot photo of the front since it is the same in the back.

Sheet metal home made clamp, then double sided tape for the LED to the base.

One photo with pad in place and one with out.

Great job. That looks fantastic. Separate toggle for front and rear?
