Reno,
OK, how is it done. My father hand barely fits under the dash area. Can I change the bulb if I pull the instrument cluster, or do I pull the switch and then access the bulb and it's holder?
Thanks in advance
Mike Haberthur

Well first when asking for help year/model/market aids in getting the correct answer sooner.

Disconnect the battery negative - cable before you pull the meter. It will only come out so far because of the speedo cable. Should be enough room to change the meter's light bulbs. There is a bulb holder that locks into the circuit board - twist it like 90 degrees and pull it out - change the bulb - re-insert the holder/bulb. Put the meter back in, hook up ground.

I've found that pulling out the instrument cluster enough to do anything useful is pretty much impossible if I don't disconnect the speedo cable first. Then I can lay it forward as far as I need to or pull it out entirely. That said, the only easy way I've found to disconnect (or reconnect) the speedo cable is to remove the spring from the clutch pedal, and then I can run my entire forearm behind the cluster from below and reach the tab to snap it loose. It's quick and easy to do it this way (at least for me).

Disconnect the batt, then just remove the switch.

I should have been more specific. Vehicle is a 1978 FJ40, US market. I am referring to the bulb in the light switch itself. Thank you.

Unfortunately neither the Haynes nor the FSM tells the sequence of removal. I am not able to reach the headlight switch and wiring from under the dash. Was hoping that removing gage cluster would allow access to the switch and small bulb holder.

There's a set screw on the side of the knob, loosen that screw and then unscrew the knob. Next use snap ring pliers in the holes or carefully use regular pliers and loosen the escushion/nut that was under the knob while holding the switch from behind the dash and remove the nut. The switch can now be removed from the dash. Let it dangle and replace the bulb.

I can grab the switch from behind the dash without looking. I've used the switch as leverage to help loosen the nut.

Thank you very much!!!!

The bulb is easier to get to if you remove the switch plug first. The bulb is removed by pushing in against the little spring and turning 1/4 turn clockwise looking at the rear of the switch. 12V 1.5w BA7 in this old switch.
