lastly for more insurance I used a small drum sander and opened up the area of the shroud where the contact happened. I just clearanced that side as it's where the blade enters.

That area is a large solid mass of plastic so removing some material isn't a problem.

There is no issue on the top of the rad as the blades travel under the lip of the tank.

Between correcting the radiator install and opening the shroud I gained more than 3/8" of clearance over what I had prior to the damage.

Glad it happened to me and wanted to make everyone aware of the potential problem.

attached is a picture of the reworked shroud.

It seems like clearance at the bottom of the radiator has always been a bit closer than the top, even stock. That is one of the main reasons I don't run one of the 91-92 8 blade fans. They seem to be more flexible than the 88-90 fin fan. I had more than one event on my old Piggy with putting the fan into the radiator. Really sucks when your in the boonies and you have to band aid it home. John

not the best news to report, but I can't get the orange hubbed clutches any more. Tried other continents with no luck. Even tried to go through a Aisin distributor and it seems the only version is an older clutch from the 90s. It would physically be the same concerning fan spacing however the internals are different.

It has a black hub with internals that look to be the same as our old black hubbed clutches. I can't comment of any performance difference between the two but would likely be better than the spaced ringed fan.

I've had people ask about this mod and this is were it stands.

For those of you who have the mod you will be receiving a blade guide that will mount to the shroud. It will be a small wedge shaped piece of plastic that mounts to the shroud to guide the fan blade away from that edge where mine caught for some added insurance.

Any future clutch will include this wedge.

I'll have pics this weekend.

Landtank, you are telling me that you found a possible situation that may cause a problem under the most intense situation, so you are going to send out a fix for this to all of us that have it, although none of us have had an issue???

Wow, you are good people.

Also, I just helped add 10 more folks become SUPER, so you may be hearing from them.

Sorry to hear about the fruit shortage -- the lack of orange inventory... :)

landtank, I did get the oj clutch from you and have been extremely pleased with it on my SC'd rig.

Sucks to hear. It's been a fantastic upgrade to the truck.

I need to do some more checking but when I first opened it up it looked like the Black hub internals of our original 1FZ clutches. Some people swear by those old clutches so I'd suspect performance of the clutch itself to be similar to that of the modded orange one.

Nothing bugs me more than to buy a product, have an issue and then the vendor states that they are aware of it! If I'm aware of an issue or potential issue I'm going to address it.

i would be one of those 10 super folks. can you let me know if there is another run of the orange any time in the future. Thanks

I love my orange clutch, very good mod.

Ok folks there is good news and there is bad news.

The good news:
LANDTANK was just notified that he can get his hands on a batch of 10 orange hub clutches. These have been a nightmare to get and to be honest, knowing the back story, I'm shocked that we are able to get any ever again.

The bad news:
In order to get these in so that Rick can get them machined we have to pay an additional $80 per unit. After a quick discussion with Rick we have decided to just pass that straight through at our cost. The only way we can really do this is if we do the ten. We have the batch available and the machine shop ready.

Before I turn on the link on the Wits' End site, I wanted to make sure that there ten folks who are still interested in doing this. The total cost now would be $385. We know it seems like a lot but as one of the first people who got to enjoy this here in the HOT San Fernando Valley, my overheating issues are GOOOOOOONE!

no orange availability. I wouldn't get all hung up on that point. I think the majority of improvement was do to running the stock fan again.

Another satisfied user here as well.

Put me down for one.
