I didn't recess. Barely notice under carpet. Not worth effort.guys that are using piano hinges for the wings, are you recessing them somehow? I doubt they are very thick, but do you notice them with the carpet placed over them?
Have not done it yet but my plan is to carpet right over them- I will let you know how it turns out.I didn't recess. Barely notice under carpet. Not worth effort.
Top is done! Took a whole can of adhesive and about 2 hours all said and done. Carpet over the piano hinges works out pretty well. Slight bludge but I'm very happy with it. Going to get another can of 3M 90 and work on the drawer fronts tomorrow hopefully. I have a bunch of extra carpet so I think I am going to line the drawers with it.

Thanks @Higgin ! I have never carpeted anything before and this drawer build is my first step up from putting togeather Ikea furniture so if I can do it- anyone canWOW! Awesome Job! I'm impressed with the carpet. I was originally planning on Line-Xing my whole drawer system, but now I'm thinking I may not go that route since once it is line-x'd, then I won't be able to mod/change anything in the future. And now that I've seen how well your carpeting job turning out, I'm thinking I'm going to go that route also.
Couple quick questions.... I noticed that you overlapped the carpet on the front (drawer opening) side. From the pictures I had seen from others, it didn't look like they had done that. I would prefer to overlap it on mine, as I think it looks better and it should help in keeping the carpet secure. Is there enough clearance for the drawers to close with the carpet overlapping now? Also, when you do the drawer fronts, are you planning on overlapping them also? Will there be clearance issues then? If I remember correctly, there was not much of a gap between the top of the drawers and the main top boards on mine. Maybe the carpeting is just thinner than what it looks in the pictures? Did you use any kind of carpet pad under the carpet, or just carpet straight on wood? I plan on sleeping in mine occasionally while camping, do you think padding would be worth the extra effort? Thanks for any answers you can provide, and thanks for the awesome pics!
Awesome work! Love the way that turned out.I got my third l-track in and carpeted 1/2" plywood that I installed to get back to a flat top plane. I had never carpeted anything and wasn't sure how that was going to go but was very impressed with how easy it was with the help of the spray adhesive and my friends pneumatic stapler. To secure the carpeted ply I used 1 1/4" deck screws installed from the bottom up. Lowes sells the carpet in 12' lengths and I bought 3'x12' and it worked out perfect with only small scraps left over. (Keep in mind though that I have the two smaller wood pieces on the main section because of my l-track. If you don't want a seam you'll need to get carpet at least 4' wide.)
As far as carpet padding, I didn't use it and don't think its worth the hassle. Even if there was some padding I'm going to want my inflatable sleeping mat anyway. So I'd say ditch the padding and keep things simple. With how expensive line-x is I think carpet is for sure the way to go. With my setup I'm also considering the carpeted sections to be sacrificial and if/when they get dirty or ripped up or gross I can simply unscrew them and replace as needed. I poly'd the included top though so any liquid or goo that spills out should be protected against.

Thanks @limster188! It's crazy I was on the first run of these but have not had a chance to work on them until now. I'm pretty sure that 10 feet is plenty for everything including the inside but I'll tell you for sure tonight when I finish the carpeting. I am only planing on lining the bottom of the drawers with carpet though, not the sides.Nice job @JonD! I'm on the April run and appreciate all the pictures and all the different configurations that others have posted. Now I have to decide which way to finish it. I noticed that you got 10ft of carpet, do you think that will be enough to do the top and the inside of the drawers?
Have you driven around with anything on top of the carpet yet?Top is done! Took a whole can of adhesive and about 2 hours all said and done. Carpet over the piano hinges works out pretty well. I am looking at covering mine to help prevent gear/bags/groceries from sliding around; leaning towards the rubber matting for the friction.
