Just sat in a $250,000 FJ40. Is it still a Land Cruiser? (1 Viewer)

Fine. I’ll do it.

Im not looking to argue or chest pound or compare the size of the swinging steak in anyway......you just happen to have been the one that wrote it.

This is very much a matter of opinion.
I have no issues driving my very stockish example many hours and covering few miles or many hours to cover many miles. The joy and excitement of driving it is as strong now, as it was the first time some nearly 30 years ago.
Absolutely! Like I said...

If it makes you happy, drive it!!

My mind and my heart love driving my 40 all day, it's my knees and back that don't love it. I'm 6'2" and 225 lbs, and these things weren't built for big guys...

But yeah, I am happiest when I am driving my 40!!

Agreed! We have driven by that home several times; I don’t know what the definition of “FJ stalker” is, ha, but I’m sure they have door cams recording us crawling past 5 mph looking. Someone in a new shiny Escalade looped back around because I’m pretty sure they were watching us in the rearview mirror like we were porch pirates.

Interesting read here. I’ve been stewing on this question in a very personal way for 5-8 years. I saw an Icon 4 door and it immediately helped define what I wanted, but with a hardtop. On Dana 60’s. With a Cummins 12 valve. But I really want it to be a Toyota FJ40. I understand many may not think it is, but I have tried to keep many things FJ40ish.

I have a ‘74 that was like a rescue from the pound, people didn’t know what they had and were trashing it. So I definitely appreciate the original design and the heritage. But I wanted what I wanted.

I began collecting donor parts 5-6 years ago and am about to finish it hopefully.

While my craftsmanship can not even be compared to Icons’, I do believe mine may be more capable off road than their little link suspension and at least as comfortable to drive. I know it’s more heavily built.

I would totally understand if I was at a cars and coffee and someone read me the riot act and told me it wasn’t an FJ40. But it’s my vision, my blood sweat and tears. And I don’t plan on going to a cars and coffee. I’m hoping to get it down Black Bear in a month.

I hope it makes most smile and doesn’t turn off the purists too much.

There’s no world that exists where I have 250k to spend on a toy or a truck, but as Sogncab said above it has added up. I don’t even want to know.

Pretendy 40s.

When I first got into Landcruiser I had the purist mentality. And I’m not knocking it but I have grown to appreciate most everything.
So many people doing cool things that we get to see on this forum .

It aint to my taste, but I have come to realize the hypocrisy of being a niche automotive hobbyist and judging others taste in their niche automotive hobby... Back in the day when I was into model railroading it was the same thing... Folks who wanted to just watch the trains go round got judged by the folks who went to great pains to simulate real freight/passeger operation. At the end of the day, its still old men playing with trains :p

On that stretched 40 I really appreciate the detail that has gone into the bodywork and paint. Looks seamless. And I'm envious of that sliding window! I'd love it is my 40 had better airflow in the back.

Dude, that's just plain awesome! Do you have a build thread?
Here ya go.

Thanks all for the kind words, and make no mistake I have high admiration for someone who can put one together as original, it’s a true thing of beauty.

Concerning the sliding windows, I was starting with an opening length that didn’t exist, and I thought major airflow in the back might be great.
I had to buy full lengths of channels and put it together my self, and it wasn’t cheap. But I do have leftovers and when the dust settles I’ll sort them out and see how many normal windows could be done.

It looks like it came that way from the factory, nice work man!

Well thank you, but it’s really a 20/20 paint job. 20 mph or 20 feet away. You can see the lines a little, there’s some sags in the paint and definitely some dry spray. I might redo it some day. For all the mods I’ve done, I have tried to keep it as 40 as possible, which is why this thread struck me.

That’s a good one, never heard of 20/20. I always say “she’s a one blocker“… Looks good from a block away.

This was at my niece's wedding a few weeks back, being used as the drive away car. It is owned by a friend of my brother in laws, but didn’t get to talk to him. It’s pretty impressive as far as build quality goes, made by Fj Co, had an automatic transmission with a faux stick to look manual. I believe it had an Fj Cruiser engine in it. Felt like it lacked a bit of the fj40 soul, but I’m sure it is super fun to drive.
