Soooo....I'm looking into the idea of adding the Pertronix kit to my ignition and distributor.....however, the first question eneryone asks is what the number is on my Nipponsenso distributor, as to cross reference and get me the right part. I appreciate that, but I can't find a number on it, at least not when opening the hood and looking around the distributor. Does it have to come out? Trying to avoid that. Where should I be looking? I'm thinking that 1977 was a transition year, so someone at Pertronix (or a retailer) should know which cap and rotor I have by looking at pics? Has anyone done a Pertronix setup on a 1977?

Thanks

Not entirely bolt on, but there are pics/advice here in the 55 section about installation.

My plan is to just call them and tell them what I want to do and see what they recommended.

Give us a ring when you're ready, we would love to chat you through the options and get you a kit setup.

Pertronix has 3 different kits commonly used on the F/2F models. We have them "pretty" sorted by the years BUT that is always assuming your Cruiser has the stock dizzy which often isn't the case. If you can't find the little Nippon Denso sticker on the side of the dizzy body (right below the cap), snap a picture of the inside with the cap, rotor and cover plate removed, email it over (kurt-at-cruiseroutfitters.com) and I can match up the Pertronix kit with your actual application. Hope that helps!

thanks. I'm not sure I even looked there for the sticker with the model number.

I'll shoot you an email.

Give us a shout when you're ready!

Got the Pertronix (91661), trying to install, and the black part (magnet sleeve) will not sit down in the distributor enough to allow the rotor to install far enough on the shaft. It says to press down firmly, and when I do, it will not sit all the way down. Is there a trick to it?
The magnet sleeve has a part that necks down, is that needed? Does not look like it will fit into my distributor? Can the necked down area be removed?
Thanks

Onemanarmy,

I wouldn't remove that piece, until you talked to Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters. Maybe just needs to have the edge cleaned up and a little lubrication to help persuade it in.

Good Luck with it, wish I had a better idea for you.

I'm pretty sure it has one. I'll be back home shortly and will look for ya.

spoke with Kurt yesterday, and he had a few ideas to get it going

So I don't know what all was going on with this, but not surprised in the least bit.

After giving everything a good once over, I went for it. I took off as much material as I thought safe from the magnet sleeve (it has a necked down area for spacing, I posted a pic earlier) and sanded off excess material from the bottom of the rotor, and finally got the dist. cap to go back on. It was still tight. Hope it holds.

So then I wired it up, simple enough.

and now it runs. Drove it around the block. Seems to run the exact same as the old points, and that is fine with me. I just hope it continues to work.

Thanks to everyone for the help and all the pics.

Glad to hear it is running smoothly. Not that you feel like tearing it back apart but if you get in there anytime soon (to swap a cap and rotor for example) I'd love to see a pic of the magnet sleeve after your mods. You're not going to see amazing performance changes with the Pertronix, you'll just never have to worry about setting dwell/gap again and you're surely not going to loose points in the middle of nowhere. You can also tweak your timing a bit with the hotter spark. Thanks again!

And 0 benefit if we have full Toyota electronic ignition, correct?

I posted a pic of the modifications I made, basically removed half of the necked down area on the magnet sleeve, and most of the extra material on the bottom of the rotor. I do want to open it back up after I drive it a bit to make sure nothing is wearing out abnormal, so will get some pics then.

So I want to redo the interior door covers/cards....the factory cardboard is about gone, and the POs attempt at putting speakers in the door was mediocre at best.

What is the best material to use (some sort of plastic?) for new door 'cards? that is easy to work with? I won't be putting any vinyl back on, just leave the cover exposed, so I'd need a dark/black color.

Where would I get something like that?
