And , the front cylinder has 2 white valves, where all other cylinders have a white and black valve for intake and exhaust.
Does this tell me anything?

This looks like the problem area to me.
Get everything cleaned off, and check these areas with a straight edge.

Yea....the area around the rear 3 cylinders is wetter than the front 3

Cleaned all the old gasket off the block....some rear ports appear to have some corrosion. The front 4 are fine, the rear 2 have corrosion pits working out from the hole. Very shallow, but I can catch it with a fingernail. Is this an issue? What would be the best way to level it out? The 'pits' don't connect with the cylinder.

Checked the old HG....the rear 2 ports are open in the shape of the corrosion, but the front 4 are small holes. Weird. Guess it's ok to run it like that.

Also, what is the thread size of the intake/exhaust manifold bolts? Some of mine were cross threaded and I'll need new ones

I prefer studs to bolts for the manifolds, and I only use Toyota studs...

And it's the shape of the cutout in the HG. So I'm gonna run it

About the studs vs bolts into the head.....as I tried to take the nut off the stud, the entire stuff came out, effectively becoming a bolt.

Using bolts instead of studs allows better access without having to take the downpipe bolts apart....which I did this time and broke one....so now I have to get those removed and new studs purchased.

Just wanting to know the cross reference for bolts to go in the stud locations. These size?

The head and manifold are at the machine shop getting the broken studs removed and the head checked and cleaned. Fingers crossed it checks ok!

Where did you take it? I have a 2f head that I have just sitting around that could use machining.

There is a NAPA store in raleigh (six forks rd) that has a machine shop attached. They do pretty good work and I've used them before.

Head is cleaned and valve job. HG is ordered.

Do the rocker arm bolts require sealant? They sure do look like they had some and were 'wet' and threads are all gunked up.

Have you talked or thought about pulling the pistons and running a glaze buster hone down each cylinder. new rings and I'd even put some new rod bearings in there, too. Not too much more time or money.

Ive thought about LS swapping it .....but creep will not take a hold of me just yet.

Just need to know if bolt sealant is necessary. The FSM does not say, but mine appear to have been sealed.

I'm not a Toyota guy but if the bolt goes in a water jacket I have always sealed it, if it does not go in a water jacket I have not.
