I am in the process of swapping out my 1F for a 2F in my 1970 FJ40. I need no smog equipment so I want to ditch the smog pump. However, the smog pump is the tensioning device for the water pump belt. Is there any type of adjustable Idler pulley I can use in place of the pump?

cheap option is to gank the guts out of the smog pump and either repack/replace the crucial bearings in it. (they are sealed bearings, so repacking is not a great option).

Before I put PS on my '74 F I had one belt that ran in the narrow groove and went around the waterpump and ran the alternator. I use the wide groove belt to power steering pump and it also runs the waterpump. Currently you could just get a new longer belt and run the waterpump and alternator with it. Just lose the airpimp.
IMO

I am confused. If you reuse the water pump from your F, and you leave your alternator on the driver's side, you should be on the inboard pulley, and without any smog pump.

PM me and I'll tell you about how to place a 105 amp chevy alternator in there with about 2 hours work using the smog pump bracket. Then run Dual Batteries and Dual Alternators. Sweeeeet and redundant. I plan on doing a tech write up with pics and everything it worked out so well.

I have no smog on my 76 2F and removed the A/C that was on it and I currently run one belt (dual crank pulley) to the water pump, then to the alternator (on the passenger side of the moter) and use the tensioner on the alternator to elimiate slack in the belt. I guess I am confused b/c I dont know which accesories you are transfering form the F motor to the 2F.

Must have been a secret.

As I recall Man-a-fre sells one.

Jim C. also sells one.

I made mine.

why would anybody want to run two alternators? seems silly to me. just run one quality alternator which will meet your amp output requirements and be done with it.

I have seen the one Jim C offers, and can say it is a nice product. AND I like to support fellow MUD vendors.;)

Very nice. Do you recall where you got the pulley?

Looks really nice. Is the pulley hook up just a pulley with a bolt welded on? I'd also like to know the specs on the pulley. Thanks! ty

The pulley was an idler from an FJ62 that I harvested when I grabbed the 3FE bits. Bolt was not welded. The 1/2" bar was drilled and tapped for the OEM pulley bolt. There is a 1/2" spacer behind the pulley.

As a welder?

Idler Pulley Using the 3FE part on a 2F

I bought the 3FE part (Grant posted it up somewhere), Toyota P/N 16630-61020 ($61). It aligned with the pulley axis, one of the bolt holes is bolted to the front of the block. A buddy of mine and I fabbed up some brackets (top & bottom).

The brackets are pretty simple, mostly tabs with nuts attached. The bottom one goes in the holes for the standard air pump mount. In the bottom picture you can see one of the bolts holding the bracket to the bolck (below the steering shaft, by the motor mount).

I had to get a shorter belt, but it came out looking really nice. For your viewing pleasure...

I was running a gutted smog pump, but since I spent $61 on the bracket, I wanted to use it.....
