I rolled, where to go from here? (1 Viewer)

Well somehow I managed to roll my 96 in the dunes in Mexico. A soft rollover, landed on the wheels and finished the weekend with a cracked windshield. No one was hurt, all buckled in and gear was strapped down tight. Now for the reality of dealing with an incredible mess. 163k miles runs great, triple locked, 4.88's. I drove her home at 70 mph and it ran great. I'm thinking a donor vehicle is needed to make this right. Anyone got any leads on a donor or a stipped down cab in good shape? I'm not sure what's easier - putting a new cab on the existing rig or transferring all of the drivetrain to a donor rig. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

You might want to check with Proffitt’s I remember Jeremiah saying he had a bunch of 80 body shells from where they’d pulled the drivetrain and frames to swap under various 45’s, 55’s, but mainly 60’s. He might even have one in your color?

Perfect candidate for a new aluminum fj45 body swap. I can't remember the company but someone is making new 45 series aluminum bodies designed to fit an 80 series.

I don't have an answer on the swap options, but I wanted to say good job using your 80 hard. I see a lot of princess 80's with a bunch of bar work, sliders, etc., and when I look under them it's all spotless with no scratches. You have a project ahead of you, for sure. But good work getting out in the real world (not on a keyboard) and driving the heck out of that thing. I'm sure you'll get it squared away and have a bunch more adventures ahead.

Aqualu was one.

Thanks but I’m just not up for that kind of project. A body swap is even more than I want to take on but it may be the only option

Thanks I really appreciate it. I’ve had this rig for 10 years and I didn’t buy it to baby it but damn I’m bummed!

I have an 80 I'm about to part out. Good body, tons of good parts. Message me if you want more details.

As far as what's easier, depends on conditions of the other rig. If your frame and drivetrain are better than the donor, keep them and swap body (it's time intensive but doable). If you find a better condition rolling donor with good title, then drivetrain swap it. Still labor intensive. But not as much as body swapping

How bad is the A pillar? Hard to see in the pics. If it were me, I would start at one end or the other, pull interior panels, and take my time working the body back out. Seeing how "Bob" already autographed it for you, it just ads more character to its story.

what a bummer

look at your messages

Make sure your donor is the right year.
91-94 will be different.

This.

Or have a shop do it; just tell them no, it's not insurance work, you just want it repaired to where it's safe and drivable.

Ok - shop day. Here are some better pics. When I measure off my “light duty” 80 it looks like the actual windshield frame crushed only about 1/2”. My drivers A pillar deformed just a bit. Drivers B pillar flexed enough to crack the cheap repaint. I have a body man around the corner. He was pushing for a donor cab but now I’m thinking with a driver front fender, drivers doors, and a game plan to rework the crushed roof somehow, I just might be able to get this young lady presentable again. Appreciate the feedback!

I’m glad everyone was safe and no one got hurt.
Now you have to consider that the cab has been compromised heaven forbid, but if there was ever another rollover, it’s not gonna hold up as well now that the cab is compromised.
I know it seems easier and cheaper, but I still think a body swap is the safest idea.

Ok - So some creasing on both A and B pillars. It looks like the cab crushed minimally at the B pillar - only about 1/8 - 3/16”

I mostly agree with you. Looks to me like the sunroof option which we all have in the US gives you less cross members and therefore less “cab-crush” safety. At least that’s how I see it. If I can rebuild the top and add those non-US cross members (delete sunroof) I would think that would help a lot. Hoping someone on here will tell me that those A and B pillars can just be reinforced with some flat metal from the interior.
