How much do you have into your rig so far?

My wife thinks I got $5,000 in it....you guys know better :)

I picked up my 1987 FJ60 about 1 year ago and so far have spent 1/2 of the purchase price to make it a reliable daily. I expect to invest the purchase price to get it where I want it.

I was having decent luck getting away with it, until a large crate was delivered from Kurt/ARB

Lots of good times, beer, good friends, and awesome places...
That's how much I put into it...
Enjoy it while you can/want it.......

oh my batman!!!

most of what I have spent has been tuition (ie my training), now I am getting serious and doing things far better.

most definitely in the 5 figures, but NOT near half the price of the 2014 Landcruiser, at $82,000 - that is a lost cause - would YOU take that off road?????.

the new SBC power train alone is now approaching 5 figures, as I document in my build thread.

I will leave the rest..........a private mystery...........but I do have the addiction.......and the wife will never know.....she won't read my build thread........lol

Money goes one way or another, bleh. I don't mind spending (most of) mine on something that makes me feel happy cool and free every time I slide my arse into that ratty old seat. :D

At the end of the month I'm taking a two week trip to Wyoming; over 2,000 miles just to Grand Teton Nat. Park and back, more if we decide to go to Yellowstone too... I don't even want to know how much I've spent on it this year going through stuff in preparation for this trip... but I know I haven't saved a paycheck since March...

In the last three years I've probably spent almost enough on my 60 to pay for one of those new Tacoma's I've had my eye on...

That said, I've met some of the coolest people around and been to some pretty amazing places because of it. Not to mention how much I've learned from maintaining it! I don't know if I'll keep if forever, but I certainly know that I don't regret picking it as my first car.

This cost me $7000

This cost me $6000 to get it to this stage

So I'm currently at around $14,000 and luved every minute spending every cent, oh! And still got mor to go yet.

Bought the car for 1000€, another 1000€ to get it running and street legal, probably another 1000€ for toys like winch and bigger wheels......I really dont want to think how many hours of my time though

ASSUMING you want a solid driver: add up the costs to baseline with OEM Toyota parts and supplies: full fluid change for engine, coolant, brakes, clutch, trans/transfer & axles, full tune up (cap/rotor/plugs/wires etc), repack/reseal knuckles & bearings, grease driveshafts and steering... and probably some other stuff.

This is the starting point. once you do all of this, or really WHILE you are doing this, you may discover parts that need replacing: tie rod ends, knuckle bearings, driveshaft spider gears etc etc...
Once the truck is solid from all of this it should run on gas and oil changes (and other "regular" maintenance) for years.

Cost of the above? Probably a minimum of $600 if you do all the work yourself. If you have to start replacing worn out parts... maybe $2000 if nothing is a BIG part.

Paid $7500 for a rig that I thought would be "mostly sorted" with a V8 swap, lockers, FF axle, recent axle rebuilds. I thought I would only need to address some interior issues, suspension and a paint job, so I figured $10,000 total investment. Well, I'm quickly finding that I need to address a lot of mechanical issues that I didn't anticipate that are mostly minor, but are definitely going to add up. I should also mention, these are GM mechanical issues, so they are more numerous than you might find with the stock Toyota drivetrain, but also much cheaper parts-wise.

Bottom line, I will probably spend $15,000 to get the "mostly sorted" rig that I thought I was buying in the first place :D

:edit:
FWIW, I spent $1900 on my '85 and the only maintenance I ever did was a new fuel pump and filter. Threw in a $300 locker and beat on it for two years and she never let me down... but there was a lot of deferred maintenance when she went to her new home.

I've never wanted to add up the actual incurred costs, but if I had to guess, I'd say somewhere between 15k and 20k USD for Moonshine, including the initial purchase price.

How do you put a price on Love.....As Mark says get it mechanically sorted and not leaking, running on clean lubricants and fuel. Address the rust and safety issues, spend some time getting to know the truck and cleaning it up. It really all gets down to "get on board with your first one, spend what you can without getting a divorce and "drive, drive, drive. Probably will not get all back what you put in but it still is a really good time and a great source of frustration and satisfaction.

Oh I forgot the question.... between 15k and 20k over a period of time including the purchase price for a well sorted solid FJ60

I'm definitely in the 20s now if I include initial purchase price and so of the custom stuff. But when the Zombie Apocalypse hits money wont matter:cool:, just lead and land cruisers

Just about as much as a fully-loaded 2014 Honda Civic...which helps put it in perspective.
