Hi everyone

Today I fitted a pair of gas bonnet struts to my 60, ;) I've done a search and haven't been able to find any threads so I thought I'd post up an easy How To

Firstly I purchased these on eBay for $20
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/111244174558?

Now they're are no exact holes for these struts to line up into, due to the 60 series have never had bonnet struts fitted.

The first thing I did was remove these brackets

Where this bracket bolts to the bonnet, you need to remove that small bracket by grinding the rivet off so you end up with a bracket like this fitted to your bonnet

Then you can mount one of the bonnet strut bolts onto that bracket

Now if you look on each inside fender (wing) there is a hole available where you can bolt the other strut bolt (the little one)

So you do that on both sides and then fit your gas strut

And that's it, the bonnet closes perfectly, it actually sits a little bit higher than with the old bonnet stay, so pull the bonnet stay out and give it the old heavo.

The size of the gas struts are 410mm for anyone looking to buy a set other than Australia

I'm very happy with the result :bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2:

This is what it looks like fully open with no bonnet stay :grinpimp:

Figure it won't matter since you're in Australia but even the new struts I have on my rear hatch don't do well in the winter. Maybe something to consider if your woods get cold?

Good point for America, but no problem here, so you could leave the bonnet stay attached to your vehicle to assist during the colder months :)

Looks good will be buying these tonight!!

is there any need to have them a certain way eg the way you have installed them or the other way around, due to the internal oils?

Hey Strick

The way they are installed is the correct way, they actually have an arrow on them pointing that way.

Regards

Spudman :)

Thanks mate, I did a search and came up with nothing

Ah ha! The old we call it a bonnet, you call it a hood trick :)

Well done, got a set sitting on the table right now to do, along with the 4 other things to do...........
I was going to use a set of rear hatch struts, but I might save them for back up and go with the way you did it.

Thanks Cruiser, just wanted to contribute to Mud with a simple and easy mod, even though those with so called hoods :D thought of it first

Oxford Dictionary - Hood=something you wear over your head

Yep. Only people the drive rovers call it a bonnet because they think they are British :) Molon Labe

Hahaha bloody sepos too lazy to put the letter "u" in colour or tumour, couldn't be bothered using double consonants to spell labelled or cancelled then in their infinite wisdom decide that "ise" should really be "ize" because it's too confusing for the kids to spell normalise because it sounds like normalize....

Let not get started on how you bloody pronounce aluminium.....

Now it's insisted that at the sheet of steel that covers your motor is called a hood like it's the only option because why wouldn't it be used instead of the traditional term "bonnet" as it has been called by manufacturers everywhere across the world except the states!

Isn't it enough that American bastardised the language?

All in jest gents, I do love the states for being innovative and manufacturing top notch everything, I just wish you'd leave the language alone and stop making stupid people famous.
