Hi everyone

I have searched Mud and there are currently 3X threads on intercooler installs, they are quite old and basically refer to front mounts.

So I've decided to start a new thread and for those who have read my current write up on The Grub you know there'll be plenty of photos and advice given and taken

Ok to start this thread, here is my engine

The Intercooler that I will be using is off a 4.2 GU Nissan Patrol, why you may ask? Cause it cost me $20 and it's in excellent condition.

Here's a couple pics of my intercooler

The bloke here that I purchased it from also chucked in quite a lot of parts, so I don't know whether I can use them or not yet.

Ok, my first question, and this has not been answered so far on any post on Mud is where can I get an intake adaptor to fit this

I borrowed this picture from a member on mud as it's a brilliant diagram, thanks

So please feel free to contribute to this thread, ask questions etc. and hopefully we'll all learn something

Also I forgot to mention that I have also got a bonnet (hood) scoop for it also from the GU patrol and it also only cost me $20 :)

Yesterday I sent an email to ASE TURBO.com.au regarding the intake adaptor, but so far no response :bang:

Anyway whilst I was looking at the intake on my vehicle, I noticed the intake adaptor that came of the Nissan and the Nissan adaptor has several holes drilled into it that looks like it is designed to fit different vehicles.

So I'll have to pull my adaptor off and see if this one fits, here's hoping :D

I also took a couple of pics of basically where the intercooler is going to sit and it looks like it will fit in nice and snugly

Looking forward to see what you come up with.
I think that a majority of the people are on this forum are from the United States and since we never got a diesel version of ANY Toyota your responses will be somewhat lacking. However, with that said, talk with guys like DirtGypsy, Boots, Ducks, etc and see what they have done on their diesel conversion and if any of them have looked at top mount coolers. From your initial mock-up I would question why you have it so far back in the engine bay?

Hey Greg

The spot I have selected is spot on for this vehicle, the only slight difference in location will be once I have removed the pipe that goes across the engine, so it will sit slightly forward up against the pipe with Turbo on it.

Hope that explains it.

Thanks Tapage

Interesting reading and it gave me a few tips :)

Ase turbo finally got back to me today and they don't sell parts separately, so they're motto is we'll sell you the kit and rip you off, but if you want any parts individually go fxxx yourself :)

Who needs them

Take some intake temp readings now before you mod and after it's done so we can see the difference (if any).... include ambient air temps as well so there can be some ligit comparison... include boost numbers...

Hey Oz

Not trying to sound like a noob, but unfortunately I am one when it comes boost, intercooler a and turbos this being my first. I have no idea how to do any of the things you have asked:bang:

Can you please write up in this thread, as it will hopefully assist others a how to on those things you mentioned.

Thanks

Be careful when fitting a scope, it may actually raise your underbonnet temps. You actually need a bonnet vent rather than a scope.

Vent = designed to suck hot air out from under the bonnet.
The scope can actually create a dead zone as far as air movement goes. The 60's suffer from lack of air flow from the engine bay to under the body and a scope can decrease air flow through the radiator and cause overheating problems.
A vent to allow hot air out through the bonnet can actually increase air flow through the radiator and over the exhaust manifold and turbo.

Thanks Stockhorse

I've already read a couple of threads on here and 4wdaction.com.au that talk about the same sort of problems.

However I have combated this issue and when the bonnet is closed the intercooler will be totally sealed so that the only air passing thru the scoop will be hitting the intercooler only:D

I Just put a top mount intercooler on my 12ht.
It's a PWR custom intercooler
11'' spal thermofan underneath
Hilux bonnet scoop
I still need to hook up the fan and put foam seals around the intercooler to prevent air from bypassing the intercooler (and paint it of course) so no idea on results yet.
I want to put a temperature switch on it for the thermofan but am having trouble finding one with a low enough switching temperature (most are for radiators and are 85-90 degrees c, I'm more looking at 50-60 deg c.)
Also looking at a ceramic ball type mechanical boost controller which I am thinking of setting up for around 14psi boost.
I hope to make more kits (for my mates and / or anyone else who is interested)
Any suggested improvements / feedback would be great and I'd be happy to answer any questions.

Ali your a breath of fresh air and your local too:D

I haven't actually fitted mine up yet, cause I'm still searching for one of those mounting brackets in your last picture.

Did you make it up yourself or purchase it.

If you're making them I'd be very interested in one

Your setup looks good mate

Just typing out loud here... :D

- Since Aussies have vehicles made to drive on the wrong side of the road, the location of many ancillary devices like the brake booster are opposite what they are in the land of corn fuel, exceptionalism and peanut butter. So, those of us with LHD cruisers would probably be mounting the intercooler on the other side of the engine bay (our passenger side) to keep it from cooking the brake booster and avoid fabbing various forms of heat shield origami.

- IIRC diesel 6X series cruisers do not have the carb/engine cooling fan the gassers have. Would it be easy to fit one on a diesel cruiser and wire it to constantly blow on the intercooler and/or pipe it to a plenum/vent under it? Would it be worth it?

- Have you considered piping a water jet under the scoop and a switch into the cabin so you can mist the intercooler on demand for additional cooling? You could probably hook this setup to a temp switch and make it automatic as well.

Just throwing it out there--I'm a chronic diesel dreamer.

Now to really important stuff:
- I hope y'all down under don't think Slater is taking Fanning's world title lightly, he'll be getting his 12th this year. Fanning was pushed, just like Parko in 2012. So there.

- It would be really nice to see a healthy contingent of West Oz cruiser heads representing at Bell's Beach for the Rip Curl Pro. I'll be religiously watching the webcast, wave at the camera for me if you're there in person.

:beer::hillbilly::beer:

Spuds, two thoughts.
Silicone Tubing for boosted vehicles. I don't know what the diameter is but if you measure and cut the original piping, you could make a nice flange. Secong thought, what does that 3bolt flange connect to and is it possible to delete it? Then you could run piping straight in.
Looking at the pics above I think he, cut and welded aluminum pipe.
Do you have access to an Aluminum welder?
If you know someone or could hire someone its a pretty simple job!

That being said, you should check out a Subaru wrx intercooler, it'll give you more flow and the I/C dumps downwards so you you sit it over the intake as opposed to the valve cover.
Spuds what are you going to do for heat shielding and mounting?
Any idea what pressure that blow off valve/ recirculation valve engages?
I have a good amount of experience with boosted vehicles.
What kind of power are you trying to run? The intercooler will reduce intake charge temps, but are you going to increase boost and fuel as well? I love diesel motors. They're full throttle all the time and you vary RPM by changing the fuel content in the engine. Brilliant!

I think you're on the right path though!

Another thought, Australia, Canada and New Zealand need to come back to Imperial measurements. Us and England are all lonely! I mean we all speak the sane language, like the same stuff, and drink the same beer.
