Thanks mate, yeah it's good to see more Aussies on here.

I actually have access to a set of fixed glass ones, although I'm actually a bit scared about removing the other one in case it has a few hidden surprises, it all looks pretty good on the other side though.

I can't believe how simple it is to get the windows out, you just remove 4 little wedges and then pull on the sealant and out she comes, too easy in my opinion

Sorry mate, I just reread your post regarding removal of the windows.

I had this window out in 5 minutes and this is why I don't really like them for security.

Firstly remove the trim around the inside of the frame and believe it or not but that is all that holds the window in.

Next have a look around the window frame on the outside and you notice 4 little black rubber wedges, these hold the window level, so you just get a screw driver and pop the wedges out.

The last thing to do is break the sealant, in my case it was fairly easy due to the rust, so I just pushed and then pulled on the frame and away it came, I think it would be harder on one without rust, you would probably have to run a razor blade down the middle between the window frame and vehicle and cut the seal.

Today I picked up my intercooler, it's off a 2006 GU Patrol, the 2.8 Diesel I believe, I got it for free as he has upgraded to a bigger intercooler with a fan

It appears as though it has been leaking, so can anyone tell me if this is a major problem, can it be repaired and is it worth repairing

Here's the pics

If the intercooler was originally for a 2.8Ltr engine, I would not recommend using is for a 4 Liter... the flow through the system will be higher then in the patrol.. This will cause a pressure drop over the cooler in my opinion.

Thanks for the advice mate, I hadn't thought about that side of it, my mechanic friend seemed to think it should be ok, basically I'm looking at a simple way of repairing it if it needs repairing, I suppose I could send it to a radiator place as unfortunately I don't have a radiator place nearby.

Hi everyone

I have to ask the question, have I or am I offending someone on here, I've asked a couple of questions about removing the glue from decals and the condition of my intercooler and I've only received minimal responses from a website full of wealth.

I'm really looking forward to my build my I greatly need the assistance of people here to do it.

Also today I picked up my new boots, well 4X of them have 50% tread and 1x is brand new, they 285 X 16 Cooper ST, cost me $400 so pretty happy, now just gotta go out and search some properties and find some 16 inch rims.

So here's my tyres

usually i get better responses when i start a new thread for general questions i cannot find answers to via google, and i leave the build thread for showing progress and do cross-linking if the situation warrants.

you have pissed everyone off who wants the HJ-61 but doesn't have one (not me, I have one!)

Thanks psycho, didn't think of it like that and yes what you say is right, will do

I thought you needed thick skin to be part of this forum, so go ahead and offend away. As far as your inter cooler question goes, I'd opt for a larger one, especially since this one's structural integrity is in question. I put a small one when i did my swap and now I'm regretting it. looking to find a larger replacement for it, which means more money for twice the work.

I removed the decals on my 95 pickup and had that glue afterwards as well. I don't know if you have it in OZ but I used this stuff called goo-gone. I basically let the stuff soak on the glue for ten or fifteen minutes and then scrubbed it off. I did it in the winter and it took several hours. But after a polish, it looked like it came straight from the factory with no decals! Hope that helps.
Keep up the awesome work!
Cheers!

Thanks for the responses guys, yep I thought as much with the intercooler, so yep I'll get a bigger one straight up, I'll also try and source some goo gone as well.

Ok today, firstly had to go and borrow a 12 ton forklift so I could pickup my donor car, Halls Creek is a very small town and everyone knows everyone, so driving a forklift with a full 60 series 10 kilometres is no big deal, taking up both lanes :steer:

So got donor vehicle to my house

So straight away cut out the sections I need around the right rear window

A picture of all the bits of metal that I will be welding into place

Then I cut out the sections around the wheel arches where mine have rusts

It was a lot easier cutting them of the donor car, cause you can grind thru any part of the vehicle to get the right bits, so all I got do now is cut the rust out of my vehicle, weld these in, a bit of putty and paint and job done.

Also as I have access to several different 60's here, if you need parts, just pm me and I'll see if I can get it for you, so I'll get the parts and you pay the freight, also I am driving down to Perth on the 16th December, so if any Perth WA people are after something let me know.

Parts

Hi
I'm watching your build with interest and gives me hope that I can fix up the bits of rust on my own HJ61.

I don't know if you would consider sending parts over seas, but, since there are only imported HJ61s over here, I would be interested in things like grills with intact chrome, mudflaps without rusted metal inserts, and Headlight surrounds with intact chrome.

Are you planning an engine rebuild? That would also be of interest to me.

Thanks, and keep posting!

Tim

Hey Tim, thanks for the support mate.

I have no problem sending the parts overseas, I'll have a look around here for those parts, I'll provide you with a photo of the parts and the dimensions and weight and either you or I can get a postage quote, so it boils down to how much you want to pay for freight.

As for the engine build, at this stage I haven't considered as my truck round awesome, but with nearly 400,000k's I suppose I should start considering it

Regards

Ivan

Hey spudman, you shouldn't need a rebuild just yet!
My 2h turbo has nearly 600 000kms on it, and the compression isn't to bad! about halfway between factory specs and minium specs, slightly excessive difference between cylinders but with that many ks, im happy to leave it as is.

Hows this beast going?
any news?

On another note, im planning on posting my build thread soon.. haha

Thanks mate, I'm thinking the same, I'm about to cut and weld the replacements for the window, I've got to get this finished before the 16th of next month as I'm going on holiday for 5 weeks.

Also today the sound deadener arrived, so now I've got to think about pulling the interior out, hopefully I don't find any gremlins.

So today I started on the window, marked the cut with a template and went for it

A little bit of filing and a near perfect fit

First I fired up the mig welder and that died immediately, wire got stuck. so I had to get the arc welder out, so did a few tacks and in the end got there all welded up.

OMG forgot to take photos of my welding :bang: (nah seriously I am s*** at welding)

So ive put a couple of coats of filler over it, but can never seem to get it perfect.

any ideas please

I have temporarily covered it in rusteleum until ive finished all the welding

Stick welding sheet metal sounds really, really tough.

You want to have a series of tack welds, so that it never gets too hot when you're welding. I don't wear welding gloves when doing bodywork, because if it gets hot enough that you can't touch it (other than RIGHT after the metal has been tacked in that spot) you're getting it too hot.

Tack here, move to someplace far away on the piece, and tack there.... It takes a while, but that's how you avoid most of the warpage and filler.

Dan

Thanks for that Dan, yes with the arc it's like as it starts it shoots out a burst of air and blows a hole, I'm going to practice on some spare metal and get the tacs right, perseverance and practice makes good work.
