I've been doing a disc brake swap on my 1970 40. Long story short, I pulled the axle and swapped the birf from my donor FJ60 axle and ended up martacking the end of my axle. I was having issues with clearancing my 60 birf in my 40 axle housing. I didn't think the axle was seated properly so I used a hammer to tap on the end of the axle to see if it was seated all the way. Well with my martack, it seated itself so tight in the diff that I can get my axle out. I went to autozone and borrowed at slide hammer tool and used a chain and bolt to attach it to the birfield. Well it pulled my whole %&@*!? birf off but left the axle stuck in the axle housing. I don't know how I'm going to get the axle out.

Can anyone tell me if I drill and tap the end of my axle and do the same thing with my axle as I did my birf if that will hurt my axle? I don't know how else I'm going to get it out.

HELP!

I am no expert, but it don't take much to seperate the outeraxle from the inner axle. If You are pulling on the inner axle ,you likely get it out in no time. You will have to remove the knuckle to gain acess .

x2 hit it fromthe other side just as described above

I thought about hitting it from the other side but large pin in the differential keeps me from sliding a piece of steel through from the other side. I took off my other side and looked at it using a flashlight. I have a piece of 3/8" round bar and it will not clear the large pin in the diff.

I thought about taking out the diff but can't because the axle is inside of the diff keeping the diff from being removed. I'm think my only option at this point my be to weld something on the end of my axle and try to pull it out or drill and tap. I'm leaning towards the welding unless there is something I'm not seeing.

Here are some pictures of my problem child :bang:

Next time just give the driveshaft a little twist while pushing in the axle lightly! It'll slide right in.

The splines were engaged properly but my Martack is what is screwing me. It has pushed up into the martack and created a bind.

Get you one of those small u-clamps (looks like a muffler clamp) from Lowes and clamp it behind the clip retainer, that will give you something to snag with the slide hammer....

Or if you have a welder? ... weld a chain link or bolt to the end center and use that as a grab point....

If all fails you may have to get nasty with it and just chalk it up as a sacrificed and get a replacement.....

Just hope that the splines in the side gear are not buggered....

Take the center out of a Birf, install it with the snap ring, use 2 large bars to pry it out..been there done that.

you could knotch a pipe, leaving !/4 inch on each side. Just enough to slide over the pin and tap it out. you would then be puting force on both sides of the axle, so it should not bind.

I'm going out there to try that. Thanks Butch

Could you take a piece of pipe and notch it to fit over the cross pin and still hit the end of the axle? If not do you have a grenaded birfield that you can use the inner race to slide onto the end of the axle and retain it with another snap ring then pull of that? Will the hub gear from the lockout fit on the splines of the axle? could pull on that maybe?

you guys type much faster than I....

Seems there are more than one YOYO among us :meh:

SUCCESS

We have SUCCESS!!! :bounce::bounce::bounce:

Thanks to Butch for the idea on the birf center. I owe you a beer or two or three ...

I used my chain to wrap the axle then put the birf center in held in by the c clip. Then used my slide hammer to yank it out. About 3 hits and it was done.

You can see where the martack was binding in the diff. Time to get rid of those. I obviously put them in to close even though they still fall within the 1 3/8 - 1 1/2 mark.

Iphone pics aren't the best but it was quick!
