I wanted to start off by saying thank you for all the information that has been gathered!! amazing.

I found an Fj40 and should have her on the road in a month! absolutely Beautiful!

1970 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40
Original 34,*** miles

Beautiful rig and welcome. So what are your plans with it? Leave as-is, resto, resto-mod, or...?

Don’t listen to @brian ... your bezel is fine once you flip your cruiser over on its roof :)

Are you gonna hack it up and put boggers under it ?

I have a big hunch your not going that direction... what are the plans after you get to know the cruiser?

Btw more pics and we can tell you what’s stock and what’s not :)

Some of us love nit picking cruisers ... it makes us feel much better about the wrecks we drive (ok ... maybe just me lol)

I can not tell you how many people have given me slack for not fixing the bezel yet. Im just making sure I do everything correct, In love with this car!!!
Plans.. Clean her up, gas tank and radiator are at the shop not getting checked and cleaned
Replace all the fluids
replace all the necessary parts Toyota Genuine....
New Radiator cap, Fuel sending unit gasket, Plugs, Wires, cap, rotor, water pump, thermostat, belt, hoses, pvc valve, fuel filter.

get 1975+ Toyota oem rims and hub caps in preparation for disc brakes down the road

32x 10.5 bfg all-terrains

old man emu 2.0, grazeable shackles....
Lots of time with metal polish and Zymol..
ENJOY Forever!

Any body know why the front driver side drum is locked up? its locked up real good tried the hammer, tried lots of penetrator, tried bleeding all the fluid out... won't budge.

How long did it sit? Most likely things are just seized up. Like @JohnnyC said, a BFH will usually do the trick. I personally would make sure the adjusters are backed off, get some quality penatrator in all the right areas and let it sit for a day or two. Give it a squirt every now and then. Another trick would be to heat things up with a torch and give it a few whacks, but be careful because the cylinder boots are rubber.

Congrats! Nice rig and Welcome !

What's the story of ownership that comes with it?

Locked up? Do you mean it won’t come off the hub or it doesn’t spin? If former do you have the drum retaining screws removed? If so, and so, keep soaking hub/drum interface with blaster (or ed’s Red) and keep beating with heavy rubber mallet along rim. If later, same, lol.

That looks like a very original rig, nice! Extra fuel tank in rear? More pics!

What is the the production month in 1970. Can't tell on my phone for sure but front seat looks to have the small center section. That would make it a 71 model. Which would have a brake booster and dual circuits for the brake lines. If your plan is for disc brakes on the front this would make it most easier. My avatar is a one owner 70 (10/69) bought back in 2011. Had all the same stuff in the tool box under the seat. Bought my 68 in 1974 and only the lug wrench was still there. :bang:

My 68 I have changed a ton of stuff over the years. My 70 I'm working to change the few things the original owner did. Will keep the original drum brakes as I really have no major issue with them. Take work to adjust but are fine for what I use it for. Stock wheels and hub caps. All the maintenance and good cleaning. Drive it for a while before doing any mods. A true collector would want it stock with drum breaks. Think most the buyers of the high end FJ40s never drove before disc brakes and power steering so not sure how those truely effect the value to them. To me the drum brakes and manual steering fit the three on the tree transmission. Just the column shift alone is a reason why it would not make a good DD in today's traffic.

Ill try to hit all these questions:
JohnnyC : back the adjusters? NO, didn't think of that! I'll try it when I'm off work.

Jetlander: Howe long did it sit? 14 years in a storage unit.

FJ404345: So the story is from what I can remember ... after some investigating and paper finding..
In short, Christmas purchase in Susanville,CA (1/2/71), owner for a few years, sold it to a hardcore trout fisherman in Angles Camp, CA
Trout fisherman owner it through 2005. He used to to go fishing in the sierra's; I am told.. He was a true wrencher, base on what I am
seeing, He made a custom Carb jet bracket that's attached to the carb with all his different jet still there. Angels camp sold it to a
gentleman in Stockton who had to many toys and never made it to the fj40.... it sat in his storage unit from 2005 til when I bought it
Jan. 2019... I am the forth owner.
Middlecalf: Locked up??? It was spin unless I pull the car out of the garage with the truck and a strap...
It has a con-ferr rear aux. tank. I plan on removing it.. not going to use it..

I have a 12/68 that was in similar original condition
What I learned is to take your time getting to know your truck. Get it starting and stopping and signals working. Install a fusible link from coolerman to protect your electrical. Give it a good clean just to get it familiar with your hands. Take your time looking at what are wants and what are needs. Look at each major system and refine your efforts to make sure you don't do things twice and completely address each particular system
On mine I have owned it for 6 years, I accumulated parts and in the last 2 years have cleaned restored and corrected everything that needed to be done to ensure no leaks, no squeaks. No issues.
When we did the rear main oil seal i did the pilot bearing, a new clutch and a new throw out bearing. Then I had the transmission and Transfer case resealed and checked for spec. Rebuilt the parking brake. When that was done we cleaned and greased the drive shafts and did both axles cleaning and resealing them while at the same time replacing the rear wheel bearings and seals and the front knuckles rebuilt. Then on to the brakes, rebuilt the 8 wheel cylinders, new
Shoes and soft lines with a new master cylinder. Put a rebuilt steering box cleaned and greased the center arm put new tie rod ends and OEM shocks. Then on to the engine. Compression was really good at 145 to 150 on all cylinders so we focused on getting her resealed with new belts and hoses and running well. I installed a new water pump and I decided to go to a pertronix ignition and had jim chenoweth rebuild the carburetor
After that it runs great. Last I started to focus on the interior. Installed new foam and seat covers and a new dash pad. I am looking forward to spring and getting her out for some drive time. The vendors on this forum are awesome resources for knowledge and parts as are the mud members. There is a thread for almost anything you need to do to your truck.
And just remember your truck is only original once. I feel a responsibility on mine to try and keep it true to its origins as much as i can. Welcome to the cruiser family good luck with your truck.
