I wonder if you could get a convex mirror cut to replace
the glass on the existing mirror housing? From time to time
I have seen convex versions of the older mirror head for
sale.
got rounds mirrors at checker same size and they screw right on to the stock location can get pics if you need, they work great cuz i can see more and what my tires are going over, no blind spots (not that fj40 has any in the first place) i think i paid 8-12 dollars a peice. very happy
Ditto, ~$12 for a 4" convex mirror and it bolted right up to my early mirror arms, fairly stout too, doesn't bounce around in the wind. I have 'em on both sides.
Found a solution for that all so common fj40 blind spot...
I ordered a matching pair of slightly smaller 5" round black mirrors, flat and convex (from the site previously posted).
The first thing that caught my eye, was that these mirrors utilize bolts for mounting (stock mirrors have build-in studs).
I picked up a pair of 2" long combination 5/16th studs from the local hardware store (fine and standard threads on each stud). Rather then taping the Toyota arms for 5/16ths, I cut metric threads over the fine threads ( I believe they where 8mmx1.25).
no more blind spot
I don't remember what I paid for these original Toyota mirrors, but the quality of these black mirrors are very good for $8 (each).

This mirror is useless.. completely blocked by my roll bar.
As this is soon to be my DD, I'd like to get some kind of convex mirror for both sides. Round or rectangles are fine.
Can this mirror mounting tubing be bent? It's expensive, so I'm just asking before I try it, and ruin it.
I'd rather not mount on my door. I like this windshield mount. I don't anticipate dropping my windshield forward ever. I may try swinging this passenger-side mirror forward and inward to view it thru the front glass. And replace with a convex, but that arrangement would block hood opening.
Any better options out there? I thought Mr. Bursu from Indonesia had a solution. Any pics? Much thanks...
I replaced my side mirrors with some from Cruiser Corps (dentdepot on ebay). they were inexpensive, but decent. flat on one, and convex on the other. Plastic mounts, but that's what I had before. These were the square mirrors, don't know if they have the round ones.
Bought a convex mirror at Oreilies. Was designed to clamp on a pole, but had a knob on the mirror. Fit perfectly on the stock door mirror bracket. Have one on driver and passenger side.
My mirrors look like yours only a bit different. My roll cage and doors don't block visibility. I run convex mirrors on both sides and love 'em. The arms came from CCOT. This is what I have.

Advance Auto sells a 5" round plastic convex mirror with the correct size bolt with the round head to fit the pre '77 hinge mount arms. I think they are grey or black.
