That will do it!!
We should have checked them. But was in a hurry to get it buttoned up.

Those are probably the original u-joints. ProTip: Pull the caps on your new replacements and grease up the needle bearings real good so they stay in place while the caps are off. Don't rely on the miniscule amount of crap grease that ships with them to hold those needle bearings in place. It's really no fun when one falls out of place, and you break it installing the new cap.

Once you have it running right you will love it. I have an H55-F in my 1987 FJ60. It is the best conversion possible in my opinion. The truth is the H55 was designed to go in later model FJ-40s and 60s and some light-duty Hino trucks. It is still manufactured (obviously) and used in the 70 series, Hi-Lux, and Hi-Ace trucks- can't beat a great design. Back in the late 70's and 80's Toyota opted to exclude the fifth gear on the North American models because of the 55 mph speed limits in the U.S. and parts of Canada at the time. The 55 mph mandatory national speed limits were lifted in 1988.

You will experience this (sorry I don't have the ratios, this is more of a feel thing):

1st- Is definitely lower than the original 4 speed. It's like granny gear in old trucks, but not quite as low. You will top out at 4000 RPM & 10-15 mph
2nd- You can start in second gear on a level plane or down hill. It is higher than the original first, though not quite enough to start on a hill unless you slip the clutch a lot. You will top out about 25 mph.
3rd- I call this the neighborhood gear. It is great for cruising at 35 mph and tops out about 45.
4th- This is the gear for driving in crappy speed limit zones or where you stay when you forget you have a fifth gear. It tops out around 60-65 mph and the engine roars.
5th- Cruise comfortably from about 50 mph to 80 mph. At 75 mph the RPM is about 2700 The FJ-60 handling above 85 mph gets squirrely, I usually don't go above 75 mph... not much for aerodynamics there.

You should expect 14-17 mpg in the city and about 20 on the highway. I average about 17 in combined driving, which is better than before the conversion.

Trust me you will love it. Oh, and one more thing... it took mine about 10K miles before it finally loosened up. Before then it was tight i.e. hard to get in gear at times.

ok this project has turned into a nightmare, 4 u joints total but the vibration is gone. That turns out to be the least of my problems. The Toybox is puking gear oil all over the place, assume its coming from the split case so will replace that seal (it is brand new) but guess it has a problem. Biggest issue is with the five speed itself. When i put this thing in fifth gear it makes an awful and i do mean awful noise. It is hard to put it in words but its kind of a bad bearing sound. its loud and it is only when on gas, under pressure. it will go away with foot off gas. It is a brand new unit not an old one or rebuilt one, brand new. It has proper amount of fluid and it only has 300 miles on it. it did not make this noise for the first 290 miles. Im clueless about what goes on inside this big black box but this cannot be right. Any ideas are welcome, please share your knowledge thanks

Five weeks left till Moab ?!?!?!?!

Is the gear lube sparkly?

Have not looked at any of the oil from the trans but being brand new im guessing it will be a little sparkly

I'd guess that tiny sparkles would be ok because it's new like you said. Bigger sparkles and flakes - not so good.

I believe fifth gear is on a shaft all by itself. How does it act in the other gears?

I'm betting on a bad bearing but ... I had a similar experience in my much younger years, replaced what I thought was a bad bearing and the noise continued. Turned out to be a bad motor mount that was letting the alternator hit the inner fender during acceleration.

Hope you figure it out! Take a deep breath and work through it systematically. Good luck!

Well Stump i guess it will need to be pulled again for sure, the question is what to do when its out. After some research with help from Ryan it seems maybe two scenarios are in play
1) i have the wrong adapter plate on the toybox, its a mc23 and i believe it is suitable for either a h42 or a h55 but some stuff on Mud makes reference to a mc24 adapter plate as being the correct one for the h55. Finding info on these things has always been kind of joke and i have not had a lot of luck this time either. I have sent a pm to Georg out at Valley Hybrids but so far no response

2) the set up i have will work and we simply did something wrong or something has worked its way loose. Maybe all the vibration from the bad u joint and me taking so long to get it right has caused an issue. The seal between the split case and the toybox is leaking but i dont believe that is related to fifth gear noise but maybe it is. Ryan has also pointed out that if the spacer collar thing on the main shaft has become loose it would allow movement in gear set which could cause this noise as well. It did not make noise in fifth until it had 300 miles on it so maybe this scenario makes more sense.

Any thought or ideas or positive comments are welcome and the clock to Moab now reads four week ends left
Thanks

I'm sure it's a long shot but you might check to make sure the shifter bushing is still where it's supposed to be and not causing interference.

The blue plastic ring at the gear shift. It's fine but keep the ideas coming

Georg was moving shops this weekend along with a garage sale I think. Who did you buy the h55 from? Is there any warranty on it and how does the cut tailshaft affect it?

You won't get much advice on the adapter without some phone calls during the business day more than likely.

I've never had a noise on a transmission, just a few where the synchro stopped working on them (h42) and a broken shaft (sm465)

Cut shaft ,what do you mean ,cut what ?............ Safe to assume there is no warranty at this point. I saw the thing about the garage sale , he really is great about responding to pm's so I'll give him sometime.
