Searched the interwebs for ages and I keep finding Honda stuff - what gives?

Got a one piece H41 with a high pitched whine in 3rd. Also in 4th but less. Also in 2nd but less again. 1st isn't too bad! It's a good box, it shifts fine and I drove it 600mi. in a day just after it went in. We inspected it prior to installation and it looked great. But the noise is killing the :princess:

I'm hesitant to pull it but will if I have to. Is there any intermediate steps before that to try quieten'er down a little?

I think it's just part of a tendency for whining in this country, lately.;)

My h41/3 speed case whines like an old boat v-drive. The case was rebuilt shortly before it came into my posession, so it's not old bearings. It also shifts just fine.

I have heard that the cases can get warped. (?)

I may have Georg swap in an Orion before I try to sell this rig later this year.

90wt gear lube up to the fill hole? If under filled, that may be your problem to some extent.
If overfilled, look at a transfer case to tranny hose. Many of us have one permanently installed so the oil that is being pushed from the transfer case into the tranny gets to flow back to the transfer case.

Mine (H41) got noticeably less whiny when I put Amsoil Severe Gear synthetic lube in it, but it still whines. The H42 it replaced whined too. Comes with the territory I suppose.

My H42 with 3 speed case whines the worst in 3rd gear. Don't know why that is. It's been that way since I installed it about 8 years ago. It hasn't gotten any worse. Not surprisingly, it hasn't got any better either.

You can hear my gear whine from all the way over there?

Either heavier gear lube or floor mat. Your choice cult ;)
What weight, mate?

Not over or under-filled. Might invest in a tube anyway.

From past experience, the idler gear in transfercase can cause the whine when the bushings go causing gear mis alignment. Pull the transfer top plate assuming you still have an early case and check for play in the idler gear..... or turn up the radio!!
That's a 5  job.

Googling distributors now!

Spoke to fella here who is the Australian distributor for Amsoil. He said if the box can take GL5, then use Amsoil Severe Gear and add 30% Lucas stabiliser. But if it can't, run a regular 75W-90 GL4 and 30% Lucas stabiliser. But 75W-90 is the stock range and doesn't seem heavy enough? And I don't think an H41 can take GL5..

Thoughts?

For my own archives:

3.1L gearbox.
1.7L transfer.
2.4L axle.

I have Red Line GL-4 in my H55 and I can feel the gears not synchronizing fully as I shift, especially during the first mile. I might drain the red Line GL-4 and go with a standard gear grease to see if that might help. I guess the GL-4 is to slippery and will not let the synchronizers work properly. (New H55 and freshly rebuilt split case, has the grease transfer tube installed. 5 qts in the H55 and 1.5 qts in the split case.)

You have it backwards. Gl-5 is too slippery and can attack brass synchro and bushings. Don't forget that the idler shaft bushings are brass/copper. What do you mean by "hear the gears not synchronizing fully"? The gears are already spinning together before you shift. The Brad Penn GL-4 conventional gear oil is a good choice if you don't want to use the synthetic redline.

I know GL-5 is to slippery and the H55 is new, not rebuilt or used. Build date on the tranny is 5/12 when the previous owner purchased it.

Just something you may already know, the GL rating defines how much pressure (or load between gears) it can take. GL-1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest. GL-5 oils have high pressure additives that attack bright metals, such as copper, brass and bronze.
