loose pins?

Apparently the PO didn’t know how to remove the shifter on my transmission either.

Does anyone have a suggested fix for extremely loose pins? also are they suppose to be flat sides on the pins or is this worn out from the shifter?

second and third pics are of a tool I made to make it easier......:D
Squashed muffler pipe:idea:

I made a similar tool using your muffler pipe method and it worked great! I didn't even need to add handles. Thanks for sharing your great and simple idea for a gear shifter removal tool.

Does this kit take care of a floppy shifter? This is my first FJ, and I was wondering how much play there should be in the shifter? On all the other cars I've worked on there are some rubber/metal bushings that keep things nice and stiff.....my 74' FJ Shifts smooth, but the shifter just flops around.

Need a little Viagra for the shifter, I guess....;p

IMO if you can find all the gears don't worry about it. Mine was sloppier than a slip-n-slide but it still shifted great...as long as I remembered to push in the clutch far enough

:D Yup I like the the spiffy tool Degnol made. I usually use two flathead screwdrivers, push down, and rotate......it usually take me several tries.

just restled with mine for 25 mins trying to undo it counter clockwise and wouldnt budge i tried clock wise and it came out easy just try both ways to save some time i guess.thanks for the tips tho i didnt even no where to start at doing this until i read these.

Glad to see you figured it out.

To everyone on this forum, Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I spent 15 mins struggling to get my shifter off when my helper suggested checking the internet. (I was just gonna do that) :). 5 mins on the forum, and I had it off. Good thing she was there to help, and and this forum, too. Mine is an 06/72 3-spd and it definitely turns CCW, not CW like the Haynes manual states.

Thanks for a great forum, Dave

The difference might be whether it is a 3 or 4 speed. I've never checked.

all i ever used was a screwdriver and tapped it with a hammer to remove those rings ,same with putting it back in push down with screwdriver tap with hammer and its out or in .
