I’m new to fj40 world and hope I’m posting this in the right place… I am trying to remove an oem winch off a 1973 I picked up about a year ago. However, I’m struggling removing the winche’s front drive shaft from the hole in the frame’s front crossmember. I would like to hear from someone who has done this… b/c: do I try to remove the pillow block body (13) or come about it from the other end and remove the front u-joint (3) and pull the yoke (7)?

Here’s pics and manual reference. Thanks for any help or references to old threads

8/80 Toyota switched to a different style transfer case. The PTOs are different for the two transfer cases. 60 series had three different versions of the PTO. All three versions will bolt up to any
8/80+ split transfer case. The 11/84 changed to single direction and required a winch to match the PTO.

As for a 76 transfer case it is hit or miss if it has the PTO gear or a spacer. Most I've seen had a spacer in the US market. The 8/80+ 40 series switched to same transfer case used in the 60 series. Need a mid 1963 to 7/80 PTO for a 76. Three or four speed doesn't matter. The PTO inside the transfer has to match spline count on the transmission output shaft it mounts two. Other than few of very early four speed not imported to the US will have sixteen splines. Three speed have ten spline output shafts. If you a PTO gear it will need to be sixteen splines which are a little harder to find since all three speed transfer cases had the PTO gear. Nineteen spline PTO gears are for the 8/80+ transfer cases.

Thx. That info helps a lot. Well, I finally got the other winch off by slotting the crossmember. I didn’t want to chance cracking the pillow. Another question: I looked on SOR and not seeing replacement u-joint. I take it they not available anymore? If so, I better be careful pulling these apart lol.
