Front swaybar quick disconnects revisited and tested (1 Viewer)

There is not doubt having the front swaybar disconnected give extra articulation.

I have mine installed and only tested once. My main concern is that the disconnect isn't too bad but reconnecting the sway was was definitely harder and at least for me no where near "quick". Plus with all the dirt, dirt or mud from under the truck, ground, hot exhaust and engine it was simply unpleasant to say the least. Because of that I have not used it once since.

So is there a trick to getting the sway bar back on? It seems to me that without being on 100% flat ground it is a royal pain to get the bar back. Also make sure you wear gloves, long sleeve and glasses because it's dirty and the exhaust will take patch of your skin if you don't.

Unless you have shorter shocks in place that keeps that extra flex from working... that was my case. Now with the L shocks.... it's a whole different story.

From other vehicles with sway bar disconnects: Connect the hardest to do, least accessible side first. Then grab your buddy/wife/girlfriend and while you're underneath lining up the easy side, have them push or rock the vehicle side to side a little bit while you stab the pin.

Did last night in the dark while airing up, truck running. :meh: Mud/rain sometimes is a deal changer and I will admit I have drove home unhooked.

Reconnect - Unlocked 80 is much easier, FWIW mine is factory locked. Flat ground is a MUST. Passengers side always first. Then if the drivers side is a little tweaked you can grab the tie rod and the sway bar with one hand and squeeze it and pin it. Exhaust is no where close to where you are working and if you are burning anything you need to reevaluate how you are doing it. o_O For me gloves would make it more difficult getting the pin in the passengers side on a factory locked vehicle. I always do it commando and wash my hands after.

The body roll is easy to handle until you need to make a sudden correction. I have driven the same section of highway with and without big difference/scary if you do anything out of ordinary while driving. Bottom line its much safer connected. A big time saver for me is to have the brackets adjusted so the swaybar will stay in place at the bracket without needing to hold it up. Once you find a system that works best for you it goes pretty fast. I normally reconnect while a tire is airing up, takes less than a minute. :meh:

I ran a trail this weekend with two vehicles (Overland The Americas & Overland The World) on there way to South America both running Gopro's and Ernesto said my 80 looks like a pretzel going through the holes and never lifted a tire.:)

Hey Phil,
I was looking into getting some of your disconnects and for whatever reason this post and photo of your rig flexed out just sold me on em, I'll be ordering tonight :) (and a PS PUMA mount)

I haven't done a swaybar disconnect mod on my Cruiser (yet), but have on other vehicles. I found it was enough bother (under 5 minutes for an old man on the ground) that I generally didn't un-pin the swaybars for wheeling. I still thought it was a cool mod for those occasions when I felt like doing it.

I left the sway bar disconnected until I was back on flat pavement ...generally wherever I was airing up my tires. Plenty of people would say you can just remove the sway bar. Although I'm not one of those people, I *do* think it's alright to drive a few miles with them disconnected. Just be aware of the reduced sway control until you hook them back up.

Very nice!

I hope to get mine on before going wheeling this weekend.

Have you figured your RTI #?

Good comparison to show the difference the disconnects make. I know both these truck sit at the same height and both with 35's.

I still need to pick up my set from LCP

What springs and shocks are you running?
Wish I could have made it over to CBT but was up north cutting Down Christmas tree with the kiddos.

The ever popular OME 850J/863 with "L" shocks

I'd be interested to see what the difference is in travel using the same control / ramp.

Any black Friday specials on your quick disconnects? :D

Can you, or anyone else, clarify how this relates to shock length? On the first page, you note you lifted about 26" off the ground before lifting the other... After the disconnects, you're pushing 30". The Nitrocharger 60018, the default for these trucks, has an open length of 24.3". The 60018J's have an open length of 26.25".

Will folks running the 60018 (non J's) see a benefit? And, do extended brake lines need to be run with the 850 coils in front?

Thanks,

Jack

Everyone will experience the benefit of smoother travel with the front disconnected. I dont know 100% but Im guessing there is more available travel in your set up.

Many get away with stock brake line but with any suspension change I always suggest cycling ones suspension before pushing there 80.
