Found A Forty

Halfway removed the funny looking @JohnVee duplicate tire/fuel carrier.

Jerry-rigged a license plate bracket with zip ties.

Removed the front fender flares, headlight protectors, and side view mirrors.

I have the extendable FJ40 side mirrors that attach to the windshield hinge but I think I need longer bolts and some that aren't convex like this one. Thoughts?

Nice!

Update on how it's running? Find the stumble?

Find the stumble?

Negative. I don't know any of that stuff and have no time right now to learn. H&H is currently replacing the gas tank in my International with a modern poly one that won't leak. Trading vehicles once that's all done and the 40 will get sorted.

OEM wheels and hubcaps are being delivered today - will give them a spray of Smoke Gray this weekend when it's warmer. Thanks @FJinTegaCay for the info on this.

Ordered all new emblems (missing grill, apron, and rear Toyota emblem, 4wd emblem had been screwed into the diamond plate).

Also ordered new lug nuts and hood/windshield hold-downs from Cruiser Corps.

Looking forward to this transformation. Specifically curious how the emblems attach.

@FJinTegaCay can also give you some tips/guidance on slightly bending in the hubcap tabs on the new wheels so that once they're painted they won't be unreleastically difficult to get on and off. I think I heard him prescribe a tap with a bfh?

Btw the biscuit works great on the bezel also(not just the roof), lays down smooth and seems durable enough, mudders always seem to question the durability. No issues for me in the last couple years. I have a bunch of cans that ultimately will lay down in my roof when I get off my lazy tail.

@roadstr6 - to ensure durability of the biscuit appliance paint could one spray a layer of clear on top? If so would that look weird?

The biscuit appliance paint I used for the roof and bezel is supposed to be an epoxy-based paint. I'd be afraid to spray clear over it for fear of incompatibility issues. Maybe if you waited a few months and then did it? Another issue to be aware of with clear is that if you want to clear a vehicle you should really use a 2K clear coat. 2K clear is more UV resistant than the normal 1K clears you get at the hardware store which will turn yellow in time. Eastwood sells a 2K clear in a rattle can but they are $20+/can. At some point you will have spent more on rattle cans than you would have spent on a proper paint job. There are high quality 1K clears out there but I have a feeling the biscuit epoxy would outlast them anyway.

I'd vote for spraying the biscuit appliance paint and skipping the clear. If the biscuit starts looking bad, just re-spray.

David's advice will certainly be more detailed and precise than mine... But I used a rubber mallet and gave it multiple love taps, not huge whacks. Take your time, they don't need to move much to work properly.

I just put on a glove and pushed it with my palm. I remember @FJinTegaCay recommending that. I pushed it a little to make room between the clip and the wheel.

Then put a hubcap on and couldn't get it off... Until I used a screwdriver and scratched the wheel.

Pushed the clips further, scuffed it with Scotch Brite, and then cleaned with a degreaser. Whenever it's warm this weekend I'll paint them. And hope the hubcaps go on and off easily.

They won't. Unless you bend the clips a lot. And if you do that, I'd be worried about them falling off. Just put some duct tape on the end of the screwdriver next time you wanna get one off.

Rather than using a screwdriver to remove the hubcaps, I recommend using the flat end of the lug nut removal tool, the third tool from the left shown below. Pic stolen from the interwebs for reference only. These tool rolls are awesome but $$$. I also happen to have the original tool bag and tools that came with my 40. If yours didn't come with it, I think you can find one on ebay or just assemble your own to carry with you. Let me know if you need a proper inventory.

No updates. All the parts I've ordered have come in except the bikini top and trail cover. Having tires mounted to the new wheels on Friday.

Please get rid of the grill guard.

Looking good! Since you seem to be taking input.... Now that you've honed your rattle can painting skills, the weather is nice and the grill guard is coming off, I propose that painting the bezel be one of your next priorities. That should really help keep people from thinking it is a Jeep.

My bezel has been cut - the horizontal cross-members are missing to fit that electronic pusher fan. That is coming off and I have a new-to-me patina'd bezel courtesy of @fj40alex that will go on.
