If I recall correctly, Naval Jelly will take paint also. Go CLR, clean them up and clear coat.

Consider a rust converter for the rust - I use Rust Doctor and then rattlecan it. Rust Doctor creates a directly paintable surface. I try to paint just the spots that have been converted. They're not perfectly flat. If that bugs you you can use something thicker like Master Coat and then topcoat it. That will fill in the pitting.

The Permatex rust dissolver is fine on my 71 Cygnus white paint. The longest I've let it soak is probably 20 minutes max though. I use a toothbrush or stiff nylon bristle.

Progress! Despite the wedding festivities, I was able to sneak away for a couple hours (in short chunks) and get my fix. No time for mechanical work, but I made some progress on cleaning it up.

Here are a couple before shots. First one is the state it was in sitting in the barn. The rest just show the ground-in dirt and general filth. I cleaned it with Simple Green, but that didn't take much off other than the first layer of dust and grime. The rest was accomplished with cheap Turtle Wax rubbing compound and a lot of elbow grease. I did throw a little Meguiar's polish at the hood, but put very little effort into that. I'll end up pulling the hardware off the body and really getting in there once I have it running, but this was a great distraction from the busy weekend.

Here are the "after" shots. I'm pretty amazed by the results. My wife is getting tired of me having her come look as I bring another body panel back to life, but she's being a great sport. No buffing, no fancy chemicals. Just $2.49 Turtle Wax rubbing compound.

Wow that's nice, came up a real treat.

Oh mannn. Nice find! Jelly down here!

Wax on, wax off - ah yes, excellent work Grasshopper.

Very nice

Great job
I love rubbing compound and its amazing what it can do to an old cruiser in a couple hours

Keep going !!!!!

Bless you!

There's patina, then there is ground in mouse crap and farm mud. I'm also a big fan of nice looking, original, 43-year-old paint. Sexy.

I'm hoping to not paint anything if I can help it. Just want to clean it up to see where I am on the rust front. So far, so good.

Tonight's task is to tear into the front brakes and see what I'm looking at. If things on the wheel end are trashed, I might be looking into swapping out to disc brakes up front. The master is shot and the brake lines look terrible, so if I'm going to be tearing all that out to get the brakes working, I doubt I want to put the effort into antiquated drum brakes. We'll see.

Gotta get this baby on the road!

Im currentlt looking at a potential "project patina" of my own haha. More on that ltr.
