Hard top truck, the FST has a fold down tail gate.

If he doesn't want it I can come out with cash in hand and haul it back.

If you don't buy it I will and have it shipped all the way to VA that thing is clean! 5k is a steal in my opinion but if you can get it for less that a bonus. Whatever you do don't disclose the location because it will be gone with in the hour.

Man... I'm a little surprised everyone is falling all over themselves for this 40. That looks like a lot of rust to me in those pictures and what do they say.... it's not the rust you DO see that's the problem. Yeah the tub and floor boards appear to be pretty solid but that engine bay, hydraulic hard and soft lines, brakes, axles, transfer case will all need a significant amount of work just to make it a runner. I mean it doesn't even run at the moment. I'd have no problem with the OP making this a trail truck. I don't necessarily think what he's outlined is considered "hacked up." And I am a purist when it comes to my 40.

IMO Great thing about it is no body has been cutting and welding on it, and hasn't had a bunch of mods done to it.

Buy it, nothing there scares me at all. 5k is fair, if you can get it for less bonus...if not your fine.

Picked up a 77 last year, been sittin 12 years, no keys, changed gas, used key from my 82....and she fired right up. Drove to shop, put new brakes on same day, my buddy has been driving it ever sense.

Paid 2500, but body not as nice(rust in 1/4 panels, sill and floors great), but had work done to motor and other bit's before it was parked 12 years ago.

Bought mine in NE Oregon it sat under a pine tree for 12 yrs and its pretty much rust free fyi

Buy it or what @Old Red said, it will get snapped up FAST. Find a hacked up example for a trail truck:confused:

Buy it for whatever he will take.
Sell it to someone here for 5k.
Take proceedes and buy a driver quality rig with some of the mods you want, already done.

No one will hate you for making some money on the flip. We all know that it is more work for you, but you'll be keeping a nice stock truck on the road and saving time and effort by starting with the right platform.

My thoughts exactly.

Thanks for taking the time to share your story. Both my 40's came to me in a random unplanned manor similar to your situation. After you do the official paperwork, be sure to ask the wife for more of the history of this 74. That's something I didn't do and wish I had. Perhaps she may have old photo's you could scan with your camera.

As you have wisely assessed, there's a lot of time needed to get this rig back up to it's former glory. Gator is right though, the abscence of tub and frame rot makes this rig a no-brainer. FWIW, I would offer $3000 and accept whatever his counter offer is.

Best of Luck

Wow, nice find. I'd buy that in a minute. A 74 f.5 is one great motor. If you scoop it up, I'd think twice before snatching it out. It'd be a shame to bastardize that rig. There is something about a nice stocker.

This spring green 40 was parked in 77. After some elbo grease and a some mechanical work, it's back on the road.

Yeah, 35s are probably more than I'll go anytime soon. I'd like to get it running and solid first and keep it totally stock for now. LONG, long-term plans would be to be able to meet up with my uncle to run some harder trails. Maybe Rubicon some day, but we'll see. If I can get the stock 1F motor up and running, it'll stay. If it needs to get pulled for serious engine work, we'll see. No desire to start up the plasma torch and start cutting things on this truck. I think my description of trail truck ruffled feathers of some people and conjured up images of cut fenders and exo cages. I'd love to keep this truck mostly stock for the foreseeable future, but I've also got no interest in turning it into a museum piece. Even the SOA would be way down the road in prep for some harder wheeling, and only if it's necessary for the kind of wheeling I end up doing.

Thanks, everybody for the comments. I'm going to head to the bank and try to go make a deal this afternoon. In case anybody wants to meet me out there to see it, the address is 1234 Main Street. I won't be there until 2:00.

You: I'll give you 3,000
Him: Won't take less than 4,000
You: DEAL --- BEST FUNERAL STORY YOU'LL EVER TELL:flipoff2:

My first 40 was a red 74 with a f.5 and not in near as good shape. Wish I still had it. BUY THAT 40 before he starts asking around and realizes what the market is like for these.
