I am doing a disk brake conversion on my 1968 FJ40 using FJ60 parts.
But I decided to keep the FJ60 tie rod and cut it shorter so it would fit the FJ40 wheel spacing.

Then I bought a FJ40 to FJ60 tie rod end bushing but it was apparently to convert an FJ40 tie rod to the FJ60 control arms.
I called around and cannot find anyone that has a bushing that adapts between the FJ40 relay rod end and the FJ60 passenger side rod end.

So it looks like I will need to have a bushing made but I need to verify the tapers.

I calculated the taper in the FJ60 tie rod end to be ~1 inch per foot or 4.68 degrees.
The FJ40 relay rod tie rod end stud ~ 1.38 inch per foot or 6.59 degrees.

I am seeing on line that stock tapers are more like 1.2 inches per foot so my measurements could be a bit off.

Does anyone know if the tapers are the same for the FJ40 & FJ60 or not and if it is 1.2 inches per foot?

So fj60 steering arms on the knuckles? That's the larger taper. Use fj60 tie rod ends no bushing needed. That bushing is to use minitruck/fj60 steering arms and fj40 tie rod ends. The real question you need to ask is relay rod. What steering and relay rod ends are you using? Or want to use?

Have you tried any of the vendors on this site, like cruiser outfitters. He may have or can make a relay rod with a 60 tre end on one end and a 40 end on the other.

tornadoallycruiser,
I am using the FJ60 steering arms, tie rod & tie rod ends. But the relay rod & relay rod ends are 68' FJ40. I have called around and nobody seems to make a adapter bushing between the passenger side FJ60 tie rod end and the FJ40 relay rod tie rod end.
At this point, the easiest route for me is to have a bushing made. I have drawn one up in Solidworks and sent it to a machine shop that I do a lot of business with where I work. The last time i needed something made it cost me a dozen donuts. And since I don't want this to cost me two dozen donuts, I need to get the taper right.
I did find a thread here on IH8MUD that said that the tapers (1.2 inches per foot) are all the same with only the diameter changing between FJ40, FJ60, & FJ80 so I am going with that.

while your ordering get some other cool stuff for the truck.

Why not just run all 40 series stuff and use @cruiseroutfit spacers? They’re like $18, on the shelf and you’re done

I have this same project on my to-do list. I don't like how small the tie rod ends are on the 40, and seen them sheer before. I did the spacer on my '71, and don't like it.

60, 70, and 80 series use the same tie rod end taper, so my intention was to buy 60 or 70 series tie rod ends, custom length tie rod/drag link, and ream one side of the center arm to fit the bigger tie rod end taper.

I didn't want to use my FJ40 tie rod because the rod ends aren't as beefy as the FJ60 tie rod ends.. And I have already bought the FJ60 tie rod ends and shortened the FJ60 tie rod. At this point, all I need is the right bushing which is being made.

these days I just automatically assume 40 owners aren't planning on doing anything that would break a tie-rod end

Well now I'm confused. If your not using a 40 tre, then why do you need a bushing?

Because I am using an FJ40 relay rod tie rod end.

Personally I would call 4plus and get the weld inserts. He might still have some, mix the 60 end at the pass side relay rod and the 40 at the bell crank at the top of the relay rod.

2 questions, will the SBO bushing not work in the relay rod connection?
does your 68 axle use inner seals?

I bought a bushing from SOR that was supposed to adapt from FJ40 & FJ60 tie rod ends. But it was too small and it just fell through the FJ60 tie rod end. The problem with buying bushings is that there are no dimensions. The OD of the Bushing that I need is about .700" on the large end. The bushing that I bought was only about .622" OD on the large end.
My 68' had course spline ball & claw axles and I wanted to do a disk break conversion which you cannot do with those axles. I rebuilt a set of fine spline axles that has inner seals if you mean the one on the inner axle. If you know anyone that wants my old 68' axles, let me know. I will let them go for cheap.

The adapter bushing that I had made that goes between an FJ60 tie rod ends and an FJ40 relay rod end fit like a glove. If anyone else needs one I can have more made.

Question, did you consider using 60 or 80 TRE’s for the drag link as well?

My FJ40 relay rod will not accept an FJ60 tie rod end since it has a larger thread.
I didn't have an FJ60 relay rod to use to modify my FJ40 relay rod to accept the larger FJ60 relay rod end.
It was much easier to have the bushing made to adapt my FJ40 relay rod end to the FJ60 tie rod end.
