No. FJ40s suck as daily drivers.
An FJ55, on the other hand, makes a great daily driver.

Dude--Come clean. You have been daily driving your 80! LOL.

its funny you say the handling sucks comapred to your nissan.. i think its the other way around for me.. i hate the way my nissan handles but love the 40's stock steering

So you still have stock steering with center arm???

There is no way a FJ40 with SOA and 35" tires can handle better a Nissan Z on the street, but I love to hear what you did to your truck to make it handle that well though.

Thats his garage.

I think he is confused and missed the Z part of your post.

"Daily driver" is too relative of a term.

Everyone's city and job is different.

In college, I could daily drive anything.
if you work 5 miles, from your house, You can daily drive anything including a bicycle.

If you conduct any amount of business in the car on the phone like I do constantly, it is not suitable as a DD. If you drive any amount of real mileage on a commute and need to use the phone, then it is probably not suitable.

In my old mustang, a Blue tooth with noise cancellation went a long way in helping me talk when I otherwise couldn't. Surprise mechanical issues on an aging car are not fun when you are in a dress shirt and slacks. and 45 minutes from home on the side of the road with no tools.

I would daily drive a 40 any day if it had air condition

I've never daily driven a 40 so I can't comment.

But I totally agree about the 55....5 days, 200+ miles, 2+ tanks of gas a week and lovin' it!

the only sweet ride I see in your driveway is that FJ..what are the other two red clowns doing?

Heres my opinion:

Cool cars get terrible gas mileage. Thats just the price you pay. Right of passage so to speak. If you're even remotely thinking of saving on gas mileage, go with an economy car...not a vintage 4x4. Otherwise, throw the thought of good gas mileage out the window...don't even think about it. You could have thought of it Pre-2001 when everything was $1 or less per gallon.

I drive my '74 FJ40 and my '71 Series IIa Land Rover daily around town. However I replaced everything up front that usually goes bad (water pump, thermostat, radiator, hoses, etc). With that said, my rover has been a daily driver for 5 years. Only had the FJ40 for a few months but its great too..just not on the highway. Stock motor with stock tranny. 50 to 55mph is the most I want to go...otherwise it is screaming. I'm 6'4" and the FJ40 is a caddy compared to the Series IIa as far as leg/body room. A lot more easy to take doors off, hardtop off, etc etc.

I say go for it. If you decide its not a good daily, then sell it. I'm sure you wont' have a problem getting rid of it.

I guess the coolness of the vehicle will out-weigh the price of gas when you drive it around...especially when you always feel like a celebrity with people asking about it and wanting you to sell it.

Please advise what size lift/tires are on the above pictured FJ40. Also advise when the 328 GTS will be up for sale. :)

yea.. mine's only on 33s that are 9.5'' wide and my nissan is a little less... 'sporty' than yours. but it is still 30 years newer than the cruiser and i would expect the damn thing to track straight down the road.

Or you could get a diesel and get better mpg's.

Then run it on WVO and pay practically nothing for fuel.

I do not understand why everytime someone wants to get better MPG's people jump on them saying deal with it.

It is the nature of the beast, for cruisers to get poor MPG's but there is not a damned thing wrong with wanting to get MPG comparable to what newer SUV's get. It can be done. Anything can be done with enough time and money. so why not use that to get better MPG's?

Yep cool cars or truck love gas. I rebuilt a 1967 Chevy Short Bed Step Side in S.C. back in 1994. All new rubber, Dash components, door parts everything. The truck had originally a 6 cyl. 3 speed on the tree with 3:73 posi-trac rear end. I built a 327 that was pushing 350 hp and found a remanufactured muncey 4 speed from a dirt track shop. Had a custom heavy tube drive shaft made. The point is the truck was fast, cool as **** and got 12 mpg on the highway between Florence and Myrtle Beach but was my daily driver for 2 years on a 34 mile round trip comute. No A/C no PS, loud and hot as ****. It is what ever an individual wants and is willing to put up with.

I've been DD my 40 for 8 months now. I have other more modern vehicles I could commute to work in but none of them put a smile on my face like the 40.

dd

with my current springs I am getting around 10-13 miles per kidney:eek:

if you can only have one the 80 can be both seriously capable off road and good dd---never look as cool as the 40 on or off road though:p

the 40 is a great second/fun hobby car unless you really do actual work with it on a ranch or a farm where it would be great
