First FJ40 build in a long time (2 Viewers)

cant recall where i got the taiwanese fenders.... but... i thought they were very close to oem... as best you can get for a one size fits all fender... it did take some time to fit

Rainey... we preped all and epoxy primered them... painted 3 coats... the main problem is getting under and between where the support is and where the lip folds over and seams... sounds like you'll have a great amount of coverage with the seam sealer and raptor liner... something we shoulda done in hine sight... however... as my work truck... it gets abused and is outside 24/7... and wasnt thinking down the road as much as i shuda


your build is coming together ... still can believe how nice the tub looks on this one... nice job!!

Thanks JohnnyC. I'm a little frustrated with the time it's taking but that's only because I'm getting closer to reassembly. It's not slowing down, it just feels like it.

The shop was having a bit of trouble getting the timing gear off the old cam Friday so I've just assembled most of the short block. A freshened up crank and new pistons and rings are in. My first engine build from tear down to reassembly (something I've wanted to do for about 30 years) and it's looking very good thanks to my automotive mentor and Hudson owner Gene.

Hey you guys... I've posted in "wanted" but no luck. Anyone know where I could get a single right side knee pad? One that goes all the way across and doesn't have a radio gap. I have very good pads but want to use a hidden blue tooth setup on this truck. Does anyone sell them?

I know it's a long shot but have you tried cruiserparts.net? Those guys seem to have everything as if they're a cruiser pull-a-part. Looks like they have the lower right dash pad for $75.

Well, raising from the dead here and finally able to sit at my computer for more than a minute or two.

Even while walking around like a crip' some things have gotten accomplished. The glass guy FINALLY showed up and installed the windshield, Vea, your new glass is here, and the six other freshly cleaned of paint and grime windows for the top and rear doors. If any of you local guys want a glass guy contact, I have a list of one you can't count on. I'm just glad it's done.

Also wanted to report on the front doors. I had a terrible "chatter" when cranking the windows up or down. Both sides. I tried WD, Lith grease, and silicone. None of those worked. Eureka! I came up with the idea of using brass shim stock and cut small, say, half inch by one and a half shims and then used channel locks to open up the spread on the coil spring and placed 3 shims per door in between the layers of coil starting from the outer most layer. Works like a charm. No chattering at all and should last for many many years.

I'm hoping to get back to assembly by the first of January. (yes, this was a bad injury.) I'll be counting on my buddy list for helping with the higher poundage lifting even though I will hate doing that.

The engine is still half rebuilt. The temp in the barn is about 27... It can wait.

Thanks Aaron. The plan as it stands now is to pick a weekend (I'll guess after the first of the year) and get 3 guys, you, Scott and Roger, to come over and I'll play supervisor and get the engine/tranny/trans installed and the tub on the frame. Then start installing all the gingerbread fun stuff after that. The only things I need to get through before that are the brake lines and the rest of the engine together.

Are you planning to fab your own lines, or purchasing them pre-made? If fabricating, what flaring tool are you using?

I bought pre-bent lines from Classic Tubing and out of 16 pieces, 4 were close enough to tweak and make work. The rest are useless. I'm in the negotiation process with them as how to recoup my loss. That bad?? I was considering classic tube for my lines, I had heard pretty much all good things up to this point. Wonder how that happened?

They must do a good job on most of their work to be that big of a company but they sure dropped the ball on me. For instance, the rear axle line not only has bends that shouldn't be there and skew the whole thing off by about 8 inches but at the driver side end there's a 90 degree bend one inch from the end. What the hell is that for? No good way to even fix it. I'd really like to think that I could salvage these pieces and move on but there's just no way. One last thing. Take a look at all the brake lines on a 40 and imagine them all (including the large ones that run up and across the fire wall) put into one box, 40" by 12" by 7". Yep, you guess it, they folded the big ones to get them in. And to think I bought the kit to save time. THAT sure didn't work.

I had same problem with Classic Tube. Eventually sent them my old lines with their bad pieces and they reworked them. Cost me some time & shipping cost. "Toyota" is no longer an option on their website.

Sounds like I'll be going with SOR for mine! That, or bending my own, though it seems like buying a flare tool is pricey given that this may be the only time I do this!

You don't need that nice of a flare tool for a one tine use.
