I need a little help here... I can't get the rocker arms to seat all the way down. I put the 4 studs in and tightened those up and figured the arms would slide right down but they didn't. I got out my small rubber mallet and tapped them down to this far but figured something was wrong and stopped. Figured I consult the gang here before I went any further. Should it be this hard to get these things seated?

Man awesome write up. Sorry I can't help with the rocker issue. After the new year I'm going to be doing a head gasket also. What gasket material did you use on water pump? Is there any tips you have I'm no mechanic but I have wrenched in my days.

Thanks bud. I used the OEM gasket and put RTV on both sides of it cause I'm paranoid.

Be prepared to do more than you thought you needed once you get down to the head. You may find yourself going... "Well i'm already here, may as well do X___________" And what turned into a weekend job is now 2 months and tons of money and time into more work than you thought you needed. At least that's what happened to me. I thought... I do not want to open this can of worms up again.

Solved my rocker arm problem. Someone on the 60/62 FB Page helped me out. As soon as he said it, it made perfect sense.There is a flat spot on the rocker arm flute that allows the 4 guide bolts to slide past. I didn't have it positioned correctly. Neither service manual I use touched on this that I could find. Lesson learned... I used my hose clamp pliers to grab the flute and turn it slowly until the rockers dropped right into place.

I highly recommend getting a set of these Hose Clamp Pliers from HF if you plan to do any hose changes, They make it super easy to break old stuck on hose ends. Best $15 bucks I've spent in a while. They come in SM, MED, LG in the set.

Shops open. Cleared out the cart so I can find the 10mm. I’ve got my 3 manuals out at the ready. I’ve got a slight hangover from to much Caymas last night. A few mistakes may be made. Let’s do this!

Update.

Getting closer... Got the Dizzy on, thermo house, air rail, side cover, & carb. a bunch of misc hoses. Glued the new gasket on the flywheel/clutch cover. I forgot to put the hard fuel line in so I have to go out and figure out if I can wiggle it in there or if the air rail has to come out again, ugh... One more weekend and I should be driving to the smog shop.

Scrambling to make progress... Rains are coming this week. Still have the oil pan (I ran out of TOY103 seal packing goop), battery tray/battery. Gotta wire in the new fusible link I got from Georg, put on the clutch cover and adjust the valves. Then drive it to the California Smog shop and say a pray to the car gods.

Put on all new rubber O gaskets on the AC lines for the new compressor/new condenser. Green = New, Black = Old. I broke one of the brand new bolts going in to tight so I had to break out the tap and rethread. Luckily the old bolts were in good shape so I just reused one of those.

I used Thread Sealer on all of the AC connections. Seamed like the right thing to do...

Belts are on and all snugged up.

Don't give me guff about the Fram filter. It's only going to run for an hour with the first batch of oil. Once it's ran I'm going to dump the new oil for new new oil.

I just ordered the gasket and O ring for the oil cooler. Debating doing that now as well. It never ends!!!! I may wait for the next oil change.

The new cut shroud is awesome. Not sure why I waited so long to do this as I've had the rad out like 5 times before. The riveted tabs worked perfect to help guide the top in place.

New CSF 2708 Radiator. Dropped right in with no mods needed. I did need to use the old rubber rounds for the mounts. @NeverGiveUpYota You got one of these propane heaters? I can't imagine turning the wrench where you live this time of year.

The shroud has a slight pink hue as I got some overspray on it from painting a bunch of the other stuff red. Just a bunch of speckles. Oh well...

Haha! Funny fact actually this past weekend I had basic cheap tractor supply fake leather gloves on and my fingertips were getting so cold I swapped to my knitted mittens w/ thick snowmobile mittens over them while I used the angle grinder. I felt like a big ‘old bear holding it! Worked tho, hands were cozy after that.

After reading through this I have missed what happened with the #5 cylinder to cause the low compression. Did they find a specific problem with the head?

@gman, machine shop said burnt valve. No go boom in #5 for quite some time. Causing the rig to run rich, causing me to fail smog every time. So the motor had a miss. I wasn't familiar enough with the sound of a motor missing... I am now. Check out this pic. See how number 5 has totally different carbon buildup than the rest.

Aside from all those damn hoses in that engine bay it looks great. I filled a 32 gallon trash can with all mine. Most were deteriorated or junked up... its amazing the 2F beast still ran so great.

Got the fusible link all wired in. Also got the oil pan back in. Fought like a slippery pig. Told my wife... "i'll be in the garage after dinner for 30 minutes tops. Just gotta throw the oil pan back on". 3 hours later... It took for ever to get the bolts to seat through the new gasket. The Goop is just sitting there drying so you have no choice but to get er done. I'm beat...

Get chu some good Klein tools. Good to have round for the wires.

On to the oil pan...
Golf tee's and binder clips... Home made SST's. I'm gonna start a thread on these.

I used the tranny jack to help get the pan up into position. Didn't matter though.. Still fought me for 2.5 hours. I ended up taking the pan back out again and putting in all the new hardware instead of the golf tee's. The cork is so tight that it will hold 90% of the bolts in place while you shimmy the pan into position. This is definitely the better way to do this as it's a major pain to get these bolts started with an old pan. It's just never going to be the same shape as from the factory. After last night I almost wish I'd have just bought a new pan. But I digress... It's in now.
