Hats off to you for doing all this work in frame. Looks great, looking forward to seeing it completed.

If I had it to do over I would have pulled the motor and done all of this on a stand. I live on a hill and my driveway is fairly steep. Once I pulled the head with the truck facing this direction, there was no turning back. Hindsight’s 20/20...

I think I have all the parts I need now for reassembly. Got the last hose in the mail yesterday. Gonna get a few hours in today but it’s more parts cleaning and painting.

My engine had an exhaust stud snap off, and of course it was the very back one against the fire wall. I tried to extract it and well lets just say I failed. I had to remove the head and figured I may as well just rebuild the engine, so out she came. Now I am happy I did it, but at the time it was major work. If I didn't have access to all the lifts, stands, presses and tools needed, I probably would not have pulled mine either. Cleaning and painting took the most time but sure is purty when it's done.

Wow, Amazing. With every bolt I turn on this ol tractor motor... the more I really dig it. So simple and sturdy.

Thanks for posting those pics in the thread. Great reference to have right here in the geeeraage...

I'm still putting an LS in it one day and taking it to the race track! yeee haaawww!!! just kidding... Well about the race track part...

Slow and steady... Now that I'm off work for the holidays I'm hoping I can get this thing all back together again.

Been mostly cleaning and painting these last couple days/weeks, a few hours a morning before everyone wakes up around here. Me, my Dremel, my die grinder and my angle grinders have become one.

Used the 46mm Impact socket and pressed the new seal in. You can do this with a mallet as well but this was easier.

I guess it was time to change this hose. Way easier to do with everything off. Can you re-use that top clamp on the old one? The one you twist to get off...

This was an ebay find. I was stoked when it finally came. It took for ever to get here. It was sitting in customs for weeks according to the tracking info. Straight from the middle east. I test fit it all last night on the dining room table. Need to glue it all on next.

Got the timing gear cover on. Got the big pulley on. I torqued it as much as I could. FSM says torque the nut to 253 Ftlbs. My big torque wrench only goes to 150ftlbs. So I pulled on the wrench as hard as I could. I even hit it with the impact. Hope it’s tight enough.

I believe that's for the 3FE motor. 2F is 116-144 ft-lb. I thought the same thing initially when I did mine but found a thread on mud which set me straight before doing the work. Still had to rent a 1/2 inch torque wrench to get up to that range (mine only goes to 100) but not as bad as the 253ftlbs I thought I would need. So I would say its tight enough. :)

Thanks for the update. I have a 1984 service manual as well as this 3FE one i'm using somewhere around here. I have a late 85 so some things fall to the older service manual and some to the newer one.

I discovered doing mine that at some point they switched from coarse thread to a fine thread on the bolts that mount the water pump to the block. Happened around oct '84 I think. My truck just happened to be built that month so they were in the midst of making the change. My parts guy sent me the bolts with the fine thread originally but my truck needed the coarse. I have the fine thread still I did not use I could send you if you have a need for them. Same size just different thread. I have no use for them. Perhaps you already have new bolts but thought I would make the offer. HTH.

Robert, thank you for the offer. I did not buy new bolts. Was planning on using the old ones for now. Hoping to get out to the garage this morning and get the new water pump put on. I’ll let you know if I don’t.

Funny how there are these subtle changes that happened mid year on these things.

Got some more done today... Oh and Finished up the shroud.

IMG_8107.jpg

I'm totally using evilorgoodtwin's mod for the shroud.

Golf tee's have many uses.

Clearly I measured once and cut twice on these. Oh well. Only I'll know... And well all of you now.

Moving on to the head. Pretty excited about this.

Finally unwrapping the head for the first time. Really clean work by Dynicron in Stockton. Thanks @orangefj45 for the recommendation.

I had the machine shop do the galley plug.
IMG_8152.jpg

All new errthang...
IMG_8155.jpg

Wrestled the head in on a piece of wood.
IMG_8161.jpg

My buddy @Chopperbobsmith just jumped all the way in and helped me get the head situated.
IMG_8163.jpg

I was cracking up at the fact that he could fit in there. No way am I fitting in that spot.

Also got the new AC Compressor mounted. Still need to hook that all up.
IMG_8176.jpg

Cleaned up the push rods. Also cleaned up and painted the AC dryer bracker.
IMG_8178.jpg

Dropped the pushrods in and set the rocker arms on top.

IMG_8181.jpg

Put the new AC dryer in the freshened up bracket. That's all I got in me today. Maybe finish it up tomorrow or the day after Christmas. We'll see how much more of the garage my wife will put up with...

Is that blue truck a 72 or 74 Toyota Hilux? Vert cool if it is. My old man loved them trucks.
Good work on the cruiser btw.

Thanks Jorge.

The "blue thing" as my wife refers to it is a home made trailer from a 77 Hilux pickup. I'm slowly turning it into the "ultimate" camping trailer. I was going full steam up until my 60 wouldn't smog then all my time and money got diverted to getting the 60 to pass. Hence the head job and all this other stuff. Once the rig is up and running I'll start working on that project again. I have a build thread going over in the trailer section. The link is in my signature. I was originally looking for an 1985 Toyota pick up bed trailer to match my rig but I found this 77 (same age as me) and it's grown on me.

Very cool I will check it out.
Trying to smog a cruiser is a real PIA.
Hopefully it all works out for you.
And get that thing legal.
Have a Merry Christmas!
