Went and picked up my head today from Dynicron Head builders in stockton. The work looks good. They even painted it with high temp black. I’ll post some better pics when I in bag it.

Got a little further today... Managed to get the dizzy out. Had to wiggle and pull quite a bit to get it out of there. Cleaned the old stuck side cover gasket off the block with a chisel and my wire wheel. Had to do some serious "Hot Rod Yoga" to get the bottom fire wall side cleaned up. Now I need to clean up all the gasket material on the oil pan and the side cover, Clean the inside of the side cover area, wait for a few more parts and reassemble. I think it's time I bought a parts cleaner.

Got some more done... Cleaned up the oil pan and the side cover. I want to buy a new pan but I don't want to spend the money. The gasket was stuck on there real good. Had to chisel, and wear out two batteries on two drills with the wire wheels followed by degreaser scrub. Turned out ok I guess...

Test fitting the new gasket. The pan will go on dead last in the re-assemble.

Get Dizzy Ya'll...
IMG_7774.jpg

I went crazy with the wire wheel. I'll rattle can it black once it's warm out.
IMG_7772.jpg

Still waiting on a few parts...

Instead of buying a radiator, I got a parts cleaner. Time to do some dishes... I knew it was just a matter of time before I got caught using the laundry room slop sink for this. Pretty sure the misses would just give me the look... The look of death.

IMG_7821.jpg

Soaked these overnight...

I'm a simple man...
IMG_7828.jpg

Box O Parts came in yesterday. I think I'm ready to put it back together.

In my haste to take this thing off the first time, I split it into two. I have a tendency to do this with every big project at least once. Surprisingly this was not NLA.
IMG_7813.jpg

New side cover gasket.
IMG_7814.jpg

Little test fit. I thought I ordered the 15 new bolts for this but after going back and checking I guess I just full stoner move and didn't. I guess I'll just use the old ones.
IMG_7816.jpg

The thermostat basically fell apart in my hand when I opened up the housing unit. New one on the left is nice and shiny. Bolts will get a soak and clean up on the wire wheel on the bench grinder.
IMG_7826.jpg

The two gaskets inside were also totally blown out.

Careful that you don’t soak aluminum in simple green. There’s actually an aluminum safe simple green. Label is blue and they sell it at Home Depot I believe.

I've decided to go ahead and swap out all of the AC components while the rig is down to the long block. As I was driving to the smog shop before I tore the rig down I noticed the AC comp was making a bunch of noise. Also has metal shavings next to the clutch. I ordered all of the parts from Rex @1972FJ55 formally of Coolstream. Thanks Rex! I'm staying with R12. Gotta find a local vendor to do the refill once I get the parts all in. I also ordered a new radiator (CSF 2708) from Rock Auto. Hopefully it's not a total piece of junk. I plan to have mine recored and hold on to it.

I got a few more bits as well. Ordered a new fan clutch from Rock Auto per Beno's direction (OEM replacement is listed as the Aisin which according to Beno the Rock Auto one is the exact same as the one Toyota sells at a fraction of the cost) Also just ordered the timing cover gasket and front seal. Need to look through my socket bins and see if I have a 46mm socket or head to Harbor Freight and snag one.

I also found the clutch cover gaskets on Ebay still in their packaging. We'll see what kind of shape they're in when they get here.

Cleaned up the dizzy and put a new O-ring and dust ring on. Also went nuts with my Dremmel cleaning the fan. Loving my new parts cleaner. Thanks for the tips @Skeet

Here's a pic of the old work bench. This is actually "clean" if you can believe that.

I think that's my white 62 in the back left. Thanks for posting I miss her!

Is this your 62? I was so impressed with the engine bay that I snapped a cpl pics (hope you don't mind) The headlight electrical is far cleaner than mine. Snapped a cpl pics so I can emulate it. Domnic and I talked a bit about your rig. One day I'll do the old LS Swap. One day...

Yes sir that is mine. However the engine bay didn't look quite as tidy over on the passenger side before it went to valley hybrids

One of the main reasons for taking it there was to have them spend time making sense of the spaghetti wiring. I believe the headlight wiring was a custom harness from a guy called Daniel Stearn? I hope Dominic had good things to say! Much of this rig was an unknown gamble when I purchased it. Its a strong motor and trans combination and a pleasure to drive. If you ever do the swap I think one of the biggest challenges on swapped rigs is tidy and functioning electrical. Its not the strong suit of most mechanics I have ever met and really benefits from a set of eyes and hands that are expert in it.

Thanks for the pics good to see some of the progress on it!

Got the radiator and the condenser off yesterday. Got the new condenser and a new fan clutch in the mail from RockAuto. Still waiting on the other AC components. Hopefully get those by the end of next week. I'm down to the timing cover gasket job and front seal. I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out how this thing all comes apart. I need to weld up a special tool or something? I went and bought a 46mm socket. They didn't have a 6 point so I had to get the 12.

IMG_7899.jpg

My radiator was in worse shape than I thought so I'm glad i decided to move forward with a new one. I found a radiator shop across the street from Hayward Tools, where I got the 46mm socket called Pankey's. They appear to be the kind of RAD shop that can re-core mine. We shall see...
IMG_7903.jpg

Got a box of black rattle can, cause ya can just never have enough of this around the geerrrage.
IMG_7923.jpg

Glamour shot.
IMG_7908.jpg

The condenser pipe on the left is angled a bit different than my old one. My pipe hooks downward as you can see. Hopefully I can persuade it to fit. Anyone else have this experience?

Order a 6 point 46. 12 will slip and potentially round out the nut. Put it in gear, I think 4th w/ ebrake. Chock the wheels. Nut pulls loose to the passenger side. Use a stretch of 4’ pipe on the end of the wrench handle or an impact wrench. It’ll come.

Man... My rig is so disconnected right now... I even pulled a bunch of wire that I havent buttoned up. I'd rather just weld up a tool. I guess I'll search and see what people have made.

Why would it need to be in gear at all? Don't you just need the cam to turn to break the bolt loose?

More slow progress...

I sent that other AC Condenser back as I bought the wrong one. Late 85 has a different part number (Denso 477-0154).
IMG_7980.jpg

Got the rest of the AC parts from Rex. @1972FJ55
IMG_7978.jpg

I wasted my money on this here crank pulley holder tool. I ended up not even using it. Only the 12 point socket would fit in there as the 6 point I bought was an impact and had fatter walls. It didnt fit in between the two forks. Had this been a 6 point it would have worked great. Since the oil pan was off I ended up just wedging a 2x4 under the cam shaft. Worked great. I used my airgun and had to break out the extended pry pipe to get that bolt to break lose. This little battery gun in the pic did absolutely nothing.

I got my drill out and drilled out the outline of the gasket cover and stuck all the bolts in here. They are all different sizes so you gotta keep them in order.
IMG_7992.jpg

IMG_7994.jpg

Chiseled then wire wheeled the old gasket off. I'll soak the pan in my parts cleaner for a day.

Hats off to you for doing all this work in frame. Looks great, looking forward to seeing it completed.
