My igniter just went out on a stock 77 2f & I'm kicking around the idea of buying Man-a-fre's DUI HEI distibutor, but I don't have a clue if there is a better/cheaper source. I am assuming my rig is vacum advance & their unit is set up this way. I am constantly messing w/the points on my rig because it is primarily only trail driven & the point tab (thingy that rides on shaft) wears out too fast due to being dried out or a little rust on the shaft. Also don't really want to spend $100 on a used igniter just to be back were I am in a few months. Don't have time to salvage a GM HEI & convert it myself. Looking for simple, maint free, & little wrench time. Any help is much appreciated.

Definately go with HEI and forget the high maintenance hassle of points. As far as I'm concerned points can go the way of the horse and buggy. When I switched to HEI I not only felt a seat of the pants power increase but starting was quicker and easier. Just bump the key and she's up and running. 8)

Very pleased with my DUI

Got mine from MAF, they offered to match Performance Distributor's price. Get new wires from autoshop, you don't need their wires.

I had to re-route my heater hose and there is very little space between the cap and the block on my "F and a half" Jan 1974.

HEI is very sweet for sure. MAF's wires are definitly unnecessary I have them and am not impressed-the#1 cyl came apart when i was installing them! Get the Jacobs wires or good aftermarket as they will hold up just fine on the tractor motor.
Good Luck

What if you have vacuum retard, not advance (1975 FJ40)? Can you still use the DUI? Thanks.

I just bought a 1yr old used DUI HEI dist. Should get it next week. I'll post results after install. Curious how many had to change out side plate. I have heard from a couple that they did not.

I keep wondering how HEI can cause seat of the pants power increase over a points dizzy, unless the points dizzy was just old and wobbly. Please explain! ???

I didn't make that claim, though I would say I definately get quicker, more reliable starts , easy adjustability and no maintenance. Maybe if a dist. wasn't firing all cylinders (corroded/damaged contact, wobbly rotor, bad wire, bad plug) and the DUI was dropped in while replacing all the rest, just consistently firing all cylinders would definately make one feel the difference.

Also, placebo effect accompanying a $350 expenditure... ;)

for $100(used) or so, I would go with the fj60 dizzy upgrade

Same here.
$125 for everything I needed, same benefits as DUI.

That placebo effect is a big one. Every time I dropped more than $100 or spent more than 6 hours wrenching on my street rod, I was convinced it ran stronger.... at least until I took it out to the track and found out that it didn't make any difference at all.

Best not pop that placebo effect bubble by using any objective measure of performance. :'(

You guys are going to kill the market for high perfomance aftermarket distributors, as well as for home-rigged chevy HEI installations.

Everyone needs to describe how they got 20-30 extra horsepower, 10 mpg boost in fuel economy, 30% increase in torque at low engine speeds, sometimes the causing a "locker-like" effect on the rear differential after an HEI installation!

This will keep the manufacturers, parts houses and junkyards in business!

You do REALLY get easier starting, smoother running, better reliability and easier adjustment, but those aren't as fun as the first list.

I already replied to your question on PBB but I'll post up the link to that thread here just for those that might participate in this forum and not on PBB.

Don't mind the "rat's nest" of wires that I've been procrastinating cleaning up. :-[ A few of the "electrical" upgrades I've made that I have been pleased with are the MG Alternater, the Optima, and the DUI.

Thanks for the link to the pirate discussion, Adam.

Any pictures of the reroute of the heater hose?

There is no reroute of the heater hose. I removed the metal tube between the two heater hoses and replaced all three with a heater hose from the firewall to the tee on the lower radiator hose. I then used two hose clamps that attach to the studs that the metal tube was bolted to.

Trollhole has a drop in electronic dizzy for your rig.
