Got a little zesty pulling a cottonwood stump out of the ground and sheared 12 teeth off of the front ring gear.

It was an expensive tree stump.

Had a trip planned to the King of Hammers next week. Hopefully Marlin Crawler or 4 wheel parts can re gear me in time

Let me guess. Reverse with the diff locked? Sorry for the damage. Next time, pull in drive, from the rear...

You sir are wise beyond your years, or you were watching me.. lol. At least I didn’t break it in a tug of war against a Jeep.

I am located in Coalinga, CA. 1 hr southwest of Fresno
I have a few shop recommendations here in SoCal, but not up North. I'd call Nitro Gear and see who they recommend. Or wait for others to chime in. Pretty sure there are several members in that neck of the woods.

80's have a high pinion front diff that uses reverse cut gears, makes them stronger going forward but weaker in reverse.

it makes perfect sense now that i’m reading it, but unfortunately I did not account for that during my shenanigans. Oh well. Lesson learned

Thank you midfat.

Did the same thing last year. Actually knowing better I got caught in the moments and went 4L, Triple locked on dry concrete pulling a stump in reverse - broke front ring and pinion

Indeed it was an expensive stump, and it was painful to get over it because I knew not to do those things ! urgggg

One thing is for sure, live and learn ! wont be doing this ever again hehe

Ugh its just painful to read the title of this post. In my mind I knew it was in reverse before even opening the post.

At least now you know the tractor rental to rip out the stump would have been worth it! Hope the repair goes well and you are back in action soon.

I'm sure @AutoCraft Aus knows how to set up those gears with so much preload that it actually overcomes neutron degeneracy pressure. Cause that's how they do it in OZ, not like those pansies in AZ like @richardlillard1 or @inkpot or @Tools R Us

j/k, this is just overloading a high pinion 8" gear set. sucks that it happened.

I guess I don't understand it. I have seen people trying to pull out stuff in REVERSE for 40+ years. WHY? Can you not look in your rear-view mirror to see what you're doing? ALL vehicles with a hitch are made to PULL going forward, not in reverse.

What possesses someone to do this in reverse? Seriously. I want to know. I'm not TRYING to be a dick (it comes naturally) but I have NEVER tried pulling in reverse in ANYTHING I have ever owned.

Is it because someone sees it on an advertisement and they think it looks cool? I've seen the ads showing this and that's the stupidest thing someone can do!

I HAVE pulled stumps out with my old 96 Chevy K10, but ALWAYS in forward. I also used to pull stuff with TRACTORS. Always forward. Never once broke a ring gear or pinion in ANY of them.

What goes through someone's head that thinks it's a good idea? I truly want to know........

Some people just don't have a deep understanding of how specific things work. Not pulling in reverse makes sense if you have that understanding with regard to our setup, it isn't a concern if you don't. After all, winches pull from the front, why not straps?

Hey guys thanks for all of the comments and knowledge. I used to pull from the rear with a strap, but last year I got a winch at the King of the Hammers and the reverse pulling commenced. I would normally winch in neutral with the e brake pulled and my foot on the brake. In this instance my testosterone wouldn’t allow defeat against a pesky cottonwood stump and I put it in reverse for a little extra oomph. 4wheel parts is swapping the gears onto the 3rd for me on Monday and it will be ready to assemble for another trip to the King of the Hammers by Wednesday.
If anyone was wondering how much that stump cost...it was $2200 and counting.

Kubota doesn’t sound too bad now eh?
