Don’t pull stumps...

I'm sure @AutoCraft Aus knows how to set up those gears with so much preload that it actually overcomes neutron degeneracy pressure. Cause that's how they do it in OZ, not like those pansies in AZ like @richardlillard1 or @inkpot or @Tools R Us

j/k, this is just overloading a high pinion 8" gear set. sucks that it happened.

Why you callin? Would never do dumb stuff like that!

I guess I don't understand it. I have seen people trying to pull out stuff in REVERSE for 40+ years. WHY? Can you not look in your rear-view mirror to see what you're doing? ALL vehicles with a hitch are made to PULL going forward, not in reverse.

What possesses someone to do this in reverse? Seriously. I want to know. I'm not TRYING to be a dick (it comes naturally) but I have NEVER tried pulling in reverse in ANYTHING I have ever owned.

Is it because someone sees it on an advertisement and they think it looks cool? I've seen the ads showing this and that's the stupidest thing someone can do!

I HAVE pulled stumps out with my old 96 Chevy K10, but ALWAYS in forward. I also used to pull stuff with TRACTORS. Always forward. Never once broke a ring gear or pinion in ANY of them.

What goes through someone's head that thinks it's a good idea? I truly want to know........

Your question is entirely valid. As I sit here looking at these comments and having a pretty good understanding of mechanics I question my own judgement. To give some insight, there was some substantial lead up between friends as to which vehicle would remove the giant stump. There were Chevy off road lovers and a few jeep lovers. I feel as if I did a service to Mr. Toyoda by not letting any of those chumps be victorious against one of the greatest man made machines ever produced. Was it expensive? Yes. Did I successfully remove the stump? Yup. Would I do it again to see the looks on their faces after my 90’s mom car showed how low it’s balls hang. YOU BET YOUR ARSE

Hey guys thanks for all of the comments and knowledge. I used to pull from the rear with a strap, but last year I got a winch at the King of the Hammers and the reverse pulling commenced. I would normally winch in neutral with the e brake pulled and my foot on the brake. In this instance my testosterone wouldn’t allow defeat against a pesky cottonwood stump and I put it in reverse for a little extra oomph. 4wheel parts is swapping the gears onto the 3rd for me on Monday and it will be ready to assemble for another trip to the King of the Hammers by Wednesday.
If anyone was wondering how much that stump cost...it was $2200 and counting.

Kubota doesn’t sound too bad now eh?

So...are you saying you had your winch attached to the stump as well?

Experience is the best teacher, unless it's fatal. Then it's just a mildly good teacher to others

It's kinda funny to me that it cost you $2200 thus far.

Not because I like watching other people have issues, but because I have done other stupid stuff that cist me over $2200.

Remember the 69 Chevy K10 I mentioned?
I jumped a railroad bridge with that (Fall Guy Style) and bent both front and rear axle housings.

So trucks are made for jumping stuff, not pulling in reverse...........

I was winching the stump

And then used the truck to provide more 'pull'?

Not trying to bust any balls, just being sure I understood the situation. The reason being...in addition to not putting excess load on the ring gears (in reverse) it is also quite possible to strip out/damage a winch the same way.

Glad you at least got the stump out though. IH8STUMPS.

Stumps require sweat, no way around it unless you've got a big tractor or dynamite. One of mine from a couple years ago:

You work too fast, maybe less coffee?

with a name like General Grant you should have been driving a sequoia

I was going to use the sequoia, but unfortunately I let my buddy " General Sherman " take it to the local bank. Something about starting his own "branch"

I like how the 80 sort of sneaks up on it at 20 seconds. Obviously an intimidation tactic.

Having pulled a stump, and having rented a stump grinder and obliterated a bunch of stumps in a single, half-day rental period, I cannot recommend the stump grinder highly enough.

It should be required that new 80 owners read the first 10 pages of tech, completely, prior to using their 80 for anything other than Starbucks trips.

Anything you can possibly FAWK up has been done by at least 10 others.

Don’t feel like too big of an idiot. At least you have a lot of company...

And, welcome. :flipoff2:
