Everything 2KRacing, practically live here
So as soon as I picked up this car a few months ago, it has been eating away at me to just slap a turbo on this rig. Since there is so real easy or inexpensive way to do this, of course I had to come up with something completely different. Just a quick history about me, I run a performance shop called 2KRacing in SoCal. We have turbo charged and supercharged more than a few cars in the past 10+ years. However I came accross a few people that were mentioning a rear mounted turbo. It only took a few milliseconds for me to remove the spare in the back and start planning. I tried to use as many parts I had laying around. So kind of a frankenstein build but hey, just like the Title says, this is Version 1.0. Plan on remaking this and maybe building a few for anyone that wants to pass people on the highway while towing a trailer
Before I start getting comments like "you know that's not gonna work for river crossing right" or "you're gonna bust up that intercooler the first chance you get". Trust me, I have thought of many modifications I will be doing in the next few months. I just wanted to get the turbo on and working first. I will be adding an AEM Water Temp, Wideband/Boost Gauge 2-1 design on a pillar mount. I have been testing different turbos that have the same mounting so it only takes about 15 minutes to swap. So far the Rotomaster T4 w/.62 trim was the best. However next week I will be trying on a Turbonetics 60-1 with a .58 trim and I think that will have a a lot more kick. The best part of this turbo setup is that it uses it's own oil reserve completely separate from the engine oil. It has a oil pump and cooler with a reservoir that it feeds from. Keeps the temps well below engine oil temps and doesn't need to be cooled before shutting down the motor. Another really great thing is that it only took about 20 mins to go from turbo to non-turbo and vice versa. It is all bolt on once it's all in there. Anyways, this 80 sounds amazing. Not loud at all. Has that unique turbo spool sound you hear on 18 wheelers. Boost comes on at a little past 2000rpm and as soon as you hit about 4+ psi it feels like there is something pushing you and you can't help but to smile and laugh at how much torque is unleashed in this motor. Got to get back to work. Will be adding more pics and video soon.
