Clint,
Somehow I've been missing your posts. Your swap is looking great! The way your doing wiring is going to be clean and tidy.
You have a lot more room to the drivers side frame than I did, I don't remember, did you make or mod the rear trans mount? Looks good.
It's nice to get to the point of wiring and plumbing, and to be done with the fitment and mounts!
Can't wait to see her finished.
Also you mentioned single track? PM what you ride, I'm going to be Ashland next month and may race the Funky Chicken too!
Looks great!
Doug
Hi Doug,
Glad you found my thread. Between you, Longbow, and dohcdelsol I wouldn't have even tackled it. I must say that I also wouldn't be this far along without the help of Mike!
I ride what ever, when ever I can on a Turner 5 spot. Love the bike but Oregon sucks right now for riding except in Bend. If you make it to Ashland hit me up I would love to run the super D!
I basically centered the whole motor by just taking the tranny mount and flattening it out. The 85-87 trucks have a clocked bell housing and I made a flat crossmember that also sucked the trans/ transfer up about 2 inches into the body. If you need pics let me know!
I got a few updates you all might like to see:
First up is the I/V bag. This is the stock Isuzu unit that is the electronic control for start/ stop. I really like the idea of being able to start and stop the truck without pulling cables manually. My wife likes the idea even more. Through some trial and error (read burnt wire harness) I was able to build a 5 pin relay that controls the unit off of the coil wire. (thank you ASTR you rock!)
This sits nicely under the passenger side battery tray.
Next up is Mikes handy work on the pyrometer. An absolute must on turbo'd diesel engines when tweaking for boost and peformance. My unit was a hand me down from my brother-in-laws truck that was origially held on by a hose clamp. Not the most ideal set up. Mike took a look at it and figured out that we could drill out a 1/4 compression fitting with pipe thread on exhaust side and make it work:
threading wires:
complete unit:
After Mike left I went to town on the exhaust. I new I had to remount the turbo to get it to clear the brake booster and other items. I made a few 15 degree cuts and ended up with this:
We decided to run with it and it turned out pretty good. I really have to thank Mike as he took my vision and made it a reality and it really looks sweet. I have to say that between the motor mounts, cross member fab and this I am just very pleased with the way things are turning out:
This is how the turbo is going to be mounted:
I worked through a mirad of electrical items and finally had everything wired. Dual ARB's, dual batteries, glow relay, starting system, oil pressure, charge indicator, dummy charge light, fuel cut solenoid etc etc etc... I really thought that diesel's had less wiring:
The engine bay is once again a complete mess but it's funcional with exception of the alt doesn't seem to be charging:
It was a mad dash to get everything to this point. I really wanted it started this week and,
wait for it
wait for it
wait for it
It's alive, it's alive!!!!!!
