Dont back the shop into a corner. Give them a way to make it right at first.
I would just drop the truck off and tell them to call you when they figure it out.
Then at least its outta sight and hopefully out of mind for a few days. You need a break!

I will be honest I did not like the motor getting built somewhere, installed somewhere else, and tuned by yet another person. Thats a lotta hands in the cookie jar! And it gives the rebuilders an out.

If they act like they are going to still screw you...a friendly reminder that your rebuild thread listing their shop as THE SHOP that built the motor has 75,000 views on the biggest land cruiser forum in the world. And there are a lot of possible customers awaiting a happy outcome for you!!! May help??

I will try to have em make it right, but damn, telling me that it is my tiing or fuel mixture cuasing the gasket to blow kinda sounds like they expect me to pay for it.
Just pisses me off.
 
I hear ya...but I am sure they have had a lot of motors returned after being screwed up by other mechanics or owners...not saying that's whats happening here! But I do see their side to it also. (though I think its very uncool to automatically assume that on their part!!!)
Like I said...give them a chance. (easy for me to say) I know its hard...I would want to just freaking explode on them when they told me sorry cant look at it till later this week(not cool)...s***ty deal and I will keep my fingers crossed for ya!!!

X2! I agree with Matt. Don't go in 'guns blazing', usually doesn't work and its not my style. :)

Again, easy for us to say all of this, we're not living it. We're all watching and reading and hoping for the best. Its a Land Cruiser, you/we can fix it. These rigs exude the art of patience. Slow down, take a break, it may take some more time and aggravation, but it will all work out.

Thank goodness you have another DD and an understanding wife! :)

ok dropped it off at the cool cats at landcruisersNW here in portland.
( you guys rock ) :D

They called tha machine shop that rebuilt it and got the green light to go over the sucker today and figure it out and make an initial diagnosis.

They pressurized the radiator and coolant and did notice a leak by the heater, so maybe that could have cuased blowback into the radiator and manifold/carb and everythign is cool with th head, maybe not, they will call me later with news

Sorry if i jumped the gun on this oone a freaked out.

Not tryin to malign anyone, and the rebuild shop might be completely in the clear, and I overreacted.
So my formal apologies to everyone out there.

I jsut want this puppy sorted :)
 
ok talked to cats at landcruiserNW

They smell gas in the radiator...
coolant is gushing outta the tail pipe, and cylinder 5 and 6 are not firing. ( the pulled both plugs and nada )

They are gonna pull the head and send it over to the engine rebuilders.
The engine rebuilder will then determine whom is on the hook for it i guess.

I cannot imagine it being me.
 
Agreed, no need to apologize at all! After the time you've spent waiting, and the good money you've spent...well...it is only normal to be discouraged at this point.

I never said that you did anything wrong to your engine, not at all, all I am saying is that nowadays people seem to look for any excuse not to stand behind their work (ever notice how someone else is always to blame?), and going on your first comment, it did sound to me like they were already looking for a way out.

I sincerely hope that these guys get it back together ASAP, and that you can close this freaken door, and move on from here :beer:

sorry lil joke to lighten the apmosphere ....my head hurts...too much paint i guess LOL

They say they are ptretty happy with their engine rebuilders too.

I guess s*** happens, but i rather it stop happening to me.

Stoked the guys at LCNW helped me out today, cool guys over there

here are some photos of the head, composite head gasket, and the engine etc

I guess cylinder 5 and 6 where full of coolant.

Soounds like the rebuild place will fix the head etc and hopefully all will be ok, assuming there was not lower end damage.

Was the head painted before or after it was installed? If before did they remove the paint from the top of the head on the drives side where the head bolts go. If not the paint can get soft and squish out causing headgasket failure. Ask me how I know.

They painted it afterwards ( their paint even )

ok so chatted with the engine rebuilders, everyone was nice and cool.

They said there is zero signs of over heating, they said the heat plugs/spots where not even melted ( have no idea what this meant )
They said they would magniflux it later today/

They said definitely 5 and six is where the gasket blew.
I told them i like to use OEM toyota gaskets, and gave them the part numbers and Cdans phone number at american toyota. They are thinking likely bad gasket, but they really had no explanation of why it happened, and they are convinced it is not overheating and all is cool on my end.

I have been told that the deposits of carbon could be just the begin breaking in and just normal until the rings seat, which i was also told could take more than 400 miles depending on the ring materials.

Also could be because it was running a little rich...
LCNW said they would do a compression check and see where s*** is at after they get the head back on etc.

Wish me luck guys

make sure the head is flat and don't use anything besides a toyota gasket. should be fine :)
 
Scrape with a gasket scraper. Carefully.
