Death of a 3UR

I have no affiliation or experience with these guys other then a coworker who has purchased a used GM motor from them. Looks like they have the 5.7 land cruiser engines available. They also have the 5.7 tundra engines which are a little cheaper.

Much cheaper to just buy a good used motor vs rebuilding this one....

And, original toyota build quality, even if you don’t know the history

Have you reached out to insurance? There have been cases where damage like this has been covered.

Only if the damage is the result of a collision or covered incident. Insurance says I should have answered those extended warranty calls.

My life right now. Working through engine options, trying for a LC/LX motor first but Tundras are next. Found a great low mileage option and the price was right. Ran the VIN and found it was a Louisiana truck but totaled after a collision with reported vehicle fire. Is it a coincidence that a little digging found this on the same date? :bang:

Whatever is broken in there would likely be replaced by this kit.

Your failure is the stuff of my nightmares.

I wouldn't hesitate to replace with a Tundra/Sequoia motor. Hell it wouldn't be cheap but if you can find a high mileage Tundra motor I'd consider rebuilding it before install. The LC motor at least is supposedly designed for 3 rebuilds, with the first one not even expecting to hone the block - I'd assume the Tundra 3UR-FE would be similar.

Probably depends on whether the cylinders look like those in the Camry from the oil change thread or still have great crosshatch like other Toyotas.

I also wouldn’t hesitate to run a tundra engine if it were free of varnish or other signs of neglected maintenance.

Yeah.

In fairness my actual nightmare involves my truck dying like this but on a trail, and also my trailer is parked at a campground 1600 miles from home…

Been there (kind of). It really, really sucked.

(Rolled my 80 on the ouray side of Imogene and had to get it back to Houston to fix it.)

But you’d be trailering two things back..

Edit: OP sorry for the tangent. Even swapping bodies on the 80 was certainly cheaper than a 200-series engine.

If you found a lead from these guys, here's beer money...

Has anyone actually put a Tundra motor in a Land Cruiser? I'm getting a lot of interference that it won't work. These all seem to be based on reference guides where Tundra/Sequoia are separated from Land Cruiser/LX (one exception I found lists Tundra/Sequoia/LX570 but not LC). Sure, a 3UR-FE should be able to mate into a vehicle designed for a 3UR-FE after swapping over some model specific components, but what is missing here?

For what it's worth, in the video below, a Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician claims that he sees unstated differences when working on 3UR-FE engines in 200 series Vs. Tundra and Sequoia. In the second video below, his customer had an unexpected engine failure in a Camry and he walks through how to decide on rebuild, new engine, rebuilt engine etc. He's got some nuggets of wisdom in these videos. You might want to watch these and get in touch with him to see what he thinks you should do...

It's been done at least a few times I'm aware of. It should swap with bringing over the LC ancillaries. Though there's not been any longer term feedback from anyone that's done it.

Here's an old thread
