Ok, so the "D" light in my 97 TLC has been out for well over a decade now.

That's how I've always preferred as it was the only light that wasn't controlled by the dimmer (way too bright when trying to watch a movie while driving lol)

Last I checked, it would come back on temporarily if I gave the dash a good slap.

Thing is, I'll be listing her on BAT soon and know lit "D" is worth a few points among bidders ;)

I wanna replace it, but need a guide as I've never pulled the cluster and don't wanna break anything during the process

Also gunna need a part number for the bulb used so I can order it before hand.

The search function here keeps sending me down an endless rabbit hole of old threads with no pix

Anyone have a link to a proper write up for removal?

The temp gauge mod thread has an excellent write-up on removing the cluster.

No need to spend the coin on OEM bulbs. The common replacement is DNW1-DW33/GRA
Available from any electronics supplier. Take the green condom off the old bulb and place it on the new one.
So what you are saying is that, when the ABS light was pulled I could have just swapped it for the D light and put the green cover on it? :bang:

Yup. Same bulbs for the backlights of the HVAC controls. I think I bought a 10 pack of those for a few dollars.
The green condoms become more opaque over time. I removed mine for the HVAC controls and now I can see them clearly in all lighting conditions. I don't mind the yellowish tint.
There's a good thread on dash bulb replacement that lists every bulb for both LED and analog.

I want to do this. But I'm afraid to break my perfectly functional A/C controls. Their only issue is dim lights.

I'm tempted to get a set from another cruiser to clean and take apart, that way I don't have to risk breaking mine.

The part number you listed is the 125mA version.
The OEM bulbs are 80mA, which cross-references to part #DNW1-DW07.

Green condoms, or "lenses".

I never had a D light until I replaced the speedometer speed sensor. Now I have a D light, so maybe it's not the bulb?

The problem is the lights are on a ribbon. These paper ribbons wear out over time and lose electrical contact with the bulb. In many cases the bulb is fine but the ribbon is worn and old.

The big green condom bulbs 83119-36060 are for the cluster as a whole. Then you have indicator bulbs that are smaller such as ABS, lockers etc. the shift indicator bulbs are 84999-50180 and there is also a small green condom one. This small green goes in the OD slot.

Here’s a pic of the 4 different bulbs in the dash. The two on the right end are shift indicator bulbs.

Honestly, I went by the list that @jcardona1 posted in 2019 that I referenced. It's a pretty exhaustive list. I used them to replace the D light, the PWR light, and the 3 backlights in the HVAC controls. Visually, there's no discernible difference.
Since the removal of the cluster is a bit of a project, I'm pretty satisfied to have all the lights working now, and I'll deal with the associated extra 225mA.
The HVAC unit is pretty simple by comparison. I replaced all the original buttons that have yellowed lenses over the last 27 years with new, as they were still available at the time. That alone made a big difference in daylight, and was pretty inexpensive.

This was incredibly helpful. I got (20) for $24 shipped. Thank you!

People love spending money on new Toyota parts but us cheap bastids know that you can find those bulbs in 3rd gen 4runners with Auto transmissions. Free at the junkyard.
