78 fj40 having my top painted back the OEM cygnus white. Color looks almond or almost beige...not really a white white........is this correct?

I had a similar experience... the PO painted the bezel Pewter. I like the "original" look so I had the local NAPA Paint store mix up a spray can of T-012 Cygnus White ($16). I prepped and painted the bezel... then compared it to what looks like the original roof paint. Definitely cream beige! The roof is as you described, "white white".

I read in the MUD Paint forum that the bezel and roof were originally painted the same Cygnus White but all of the 40's I see around and in the old pictures have very white roofs and bezels.

Some thing isn't right...

Toyota Reference is a great resource for body colors, T012, T031, & T033, but nothing about the trim colors. What's funny is, in the gallery for 031 White, all the bezels are black or pewter! :)

I'm not a fan the beige swan... so I'll go back to NAPA and see what T031 & T033 look like on a color chart. Maybe they are closer to the current roof color.

It would be nice to find a Color Scheme diagram showing all of the trim colors. I found one for a '68 with item numbers but no legend for the colors.

I too believe that the roof and bezel are not cygnus white.
My vehicle is cygnus white and the top is white-white. Not cream beige.

I had the same thought when painting my bezel. Since I painted the body Dune Beige, I opted for Arctic White (I think, but may be wrong, that was the white on the uppers of FJ55s) as it was more of a bright white and provided contrast to body.

There seems to be a good deal of controversy over the correct color. This seems to come up any time a paint code is needed around here. I read somewhere that the original paint code for the roof and bezel is actually T302 Shell Ivory (or Ivory Shell?)

This is a fact...

Yet I can not find anyone locally to use the T302 code or to match it to a more recent workable code, nor have I been able to acquire a decent paint color sample of T302 to use as a reference to match any newly mixed paint...both my tops are too sun damaged to help :frown:

If anyone can help, please send me a PM. Thanks in advance

Painted mine with Cygnus White as mixed by Sherwin Williams. It looks white on the truck but not brilliant white. Though, next to a bright white color like a sheet of paper it has a very faint, light green tint to it.

Nomis,

What color is the body of your rig? I really like that color and contrast with the white top and bezel! Nice looking rig.

Sincerely,

When I redid my 82, Cygnus white was dead-on... don't know what the controversy is.

There were, well that I know of, two different official whites for the tops...Ivory Shell (older Cruisers) and Cygnus White (newer Cruisers). No controversy...people are surprised that they are not the white white they expect once it is applied, so some repaint their tops to a whiter white, which is a matter of taste but not the original white.

EXACTLY what happend to me......got to the body shop to see the metal rain gutter (painted off the top and both sides) cygnus "white" and was NOT HAPPY.......they scuffed and they are shottong everything the new toyota bright white. I think the white white will look better than the beige tint of cygnus with my bright yellow body.
