i couldn't get an alignment tool for my clutch job (3b), so i'm going to attempt putting everything back in without it.

i've never done a clutch before, does everything have to be aligned *perfectly*, or can i eyeball it and let the shaft nudge everything where it needs to be?

if need be, i can turn down some aluminum round to the right size get the radial alignment perfectish, but i can't make my own splines, so the spline alignment will still be eyeballed.

thoughts? tips?

Just find something close enough to hold it like a broomstick or something. I've never used an aligning tool on any clutch replacement I've ever done and it's always worked out fine. A little shimmying of the tranny when you're matching it up and it should work it's way in.

Howdy! Try a large screwdriver handle. That will get you real close, and then just jiggle til its on. John

heres the one i made .the handle diameter was a tight fit in the spline.just turned the end down to match the pilot bearing. a little rough looking now .

You can just eyeball it. Once you get the splines of the tranny and disk engaged, then have someone step on the clutch while you wiggle the tranny and it will slide right in like a.... a.... aaah you know what.

A kit with the 3 or so most common sizes is like $8 at Harbor Freight. To me that is a bargain when you are lying on your back in a gravel driveway in the dark in the rain by yourself sweating or freezing your tail off wondering why it won't fit together. There is a proper tool for the job and they are cheap.
